Review summary

Was a little surprised to see the high ratings from this particular cruise. Have been to Alaska several times and booked this cruise as a chance to try out the Retreat and visit Dawes Glacier. Retreat was just OK, and generally paled against the Haven on newer NCL ships like the Prima. We missed Dawes Glacier due to an overnight passenger medical issue and Coast Guard had more pressing matters than to airlift passenger off. As such, we went straight to Juneau. No compensation provided by Celebrity, but passenger disappointment was high enough that the captain gave a specific lecture on what happened. I’d like to give this specific cruise 3 stars vs 4, because the missed excursion disproportionately affected our experience even if other areas were better. Many passengers took the view that there is always another cruise, which came across as a privileged position, and not realistic for some. If choosing an Alaska cruise and this will be the one shot, recommend a cruise that spends all day at the glacier (Endicott Arm or Glacier Bay) or visits in afternoon after Juneau to reduce risk of missing. Theoretically on the right itinerary, the Edge should be great at a glacier given the bow thrusters and maneuverability. We are taking Celebrity again this fall in Europe on the Ascent, but not traveling in the Retreat so a better value. If we were to return to Alaska we’ll likely look at a smaller ship next time, such as Seabourn or Uncruise.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Some traffic getting into the port. Speed to board was solid.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Food largely disappointing. Some bright spots like selection in buffet and scratch made pizza. Alcohol selection nothing special, and vermouth tasted stale. Luminae was solid, but underwhelming given price of cruise.

Retreat Pool Bar

4 out of 5

On nicer days very enjoyable. Different liquor selection than elsewhere.

Oceanview Café

4 out of 5

One of the better buffets at sea. Scratch made pizza a highlight.

Luminare at the Retreat

3 out of 5

Not as good as we had hoped.

Eden Restaurant

5 out of 5

Definitely the best meal we had, but for added cost.

Eden Bar

5 out of 5

Probably our favorite venue on the ship.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Limited onboard activities, but this is not the ship for that. Pools were fine.

Sea Thermal Suite

3 out of 5

The lack of hot soaking pools detracted from experience.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We actually really enjoyed the music, as well as the naturalist, Celia Garland. Eden Cafe acoustic was a favorite spot.

Children's Programs

No children

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Some staff were great, others less so. Rating includes interaction with corporate staff during the cruise.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The layout is nice, and things were generally well maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Good layout, large bathroom. Bathroom flooded one day, which negatively impacted experience. Staff fixed it.

Ship tip

Temper expectations

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

5 out of 5
We live 10 minutes from the port. Highly recommend Ballard Locks and National Nordic Museum.

Ketchikan, Alaska

5 out of 5
Good breweries and distilleries to visit. Historic sites.

CRUISE ENDICOTT ARM & DAWES GLACIER Did not visit port

Medical issue on board prevented the visit. Extremely disappointing.

Juneau, Alaska

4 out of 5
AJ dock is far from town. Limited things to do. Tour was cancelled as it would have left from the ship at Dawes Glacier.

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
Train always fun. Very scenic at end of Lynn Canal.

Cruise Inside Passage, Alaska

5 out of 5
If weather great, Lynn Canal is awesome and fjord like.

Victoria, British Columbia

5 out of 5
We have been to Victoria a lot so did not get off.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Super quick from ship to car. No special passport control, which was nice.
