Review summary

The thing I most disliked was the rank commercialism all around. I was appalled that unless I spent $5.50 on a bottle of water in my cabin, there was no potable water unless I went to the buffet 4 flights up. EVERYTHING is ridiculously expensive.....$20 for a cocktail plus 20% surcharge. WiFi also very expensive. Extra charge (up to $50!) to eat at a "specialty" restaurant. And even though I ate at the buffet most nights, I was charged $18 tip per night for the other restaurant meals. I was not interested in most of the activities onboard....trivia games and other silly stuff. And the captain and cruise director talked way too much and were often too cute by half. And the ports were (of course) overrun by huge crowds. On the positive side, the musicians onboard were excellent. And of course, Alaska is stunningly beautiful and cruising is a good way to see some amazing sights.

Compared to an Alaskan cruise I took on Celebrity quite a few years ago, the food was mediocre.

Hold onto your hat…Celebrity is the least “selling” cruise line I have ever been on. No announcements of jewelry sales, bingo, watch sales etc etc etc. Also no photographers clicking endlessly. Don’t get me wrong, I love other cruise lines, but for sales pitches and up charges I have found Celebrity to be the most tame.

You made me chuckle. You sound like my friends so I'm a solo cruiser. I love a dose of commercialism.

The fare is only a portion of what a cruise vacation will cost. Lots of other fees to consider, not counting the sometimes hard sell of stuff on board that we’ve learned to avoid. We usually budget for cruise fare plus ~$3000 - depends on how much airfare is needed to get there.

Your complaints in your review summary are just what you’ll find on many other mainstream cruiselines I’m afraid

Sorry you were so disappointed with your cruise.

It appears that cruising isn't for you. If you did any research, you would know there are daily gratuities added to your account. Everything that you complained about is basically the same issues on all cruise lines, so maybe just do land based vacations.
