Review summary

We had previously been on Celebrity Millennium and were left a little flat. We have primarily cruised on Cunard and love the grand style of the ships. However, when we saw the original videos at the launch of Edge we thought we should try this out. We work in the architecture and design world and were excited by the focus on contemporary design. We were not disappointed. As a matter of fact, I may never want to get on another ship. There were a few misses, but the hits so far outweighed any minor misses. The shows (minus Incanto Quartet) were fresh and modern. And the silent disco DJ challenge was a "not to be missed " experience. I honestly could go on for quite a while about how much we liked The Edge. If you can afford to upgrade to Suite Class at some point (watch the prices regularly and sometimes deals pop up) you should do it. Suite Class makes the ship feel like your own yacht with access to Luminae and The Retreat. We loved every minute on board.

Embarkation

We did a last minute upgrade to suite class and embarkation was so simple and elegant.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Overall I was impressed with the food. We had most meals in Luminae and we never got an opportunity to try the main dining rooms. Fine Cut was excellent and Raw on 5 was very enjoyable. The biggest let down was Le Petite Chef.

Luminare at the Retreat

5 out of 5

One of the joys of being in a Suite was access to Luminae. It is such an elegant and inviting space and we always managed to get great tables with solid glass walls looking out onto the ocean. The food was always perfectly presented and prepared and our waiters were excellent at making suggestions and sometimes surprising us with a little shared dish they thought we might want to try. You really get spoiled by this crew.

Le Petit Chef at Le Grande Bistro

2 out of 5

This was by far the biggest miss for us. The service was pretty poor and the food was definitely sub-par. Just watch the experience in a video and save the $50 per person for a mediocre meal.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We were off the ship in most ports and we can be a little lazy about activities on Sea Days. We mostly spent time around the Retreat Deck. I would give it a higher rating, but the abundance of children in the pool detracted from the experience.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We enjoyed most everything we participated in. Overall, I enjoyed the amount of live music, the younger vibe to the shows and entertainment. AshlieAmber was terrific and would have loved a second performance. The new Eden show has been drastically cut down for time and was actually one of our favorite performances (shocked me after watching some of the performances online0 The worst for us was the Incanto Quartet and their operatic renditions of pop songs.

Children's Programs

No kids

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
We were very well cared for by everyone (except one slightly unpleasant girl in the Spa)

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
This ship is truly a game-changer for us. We loved the contemporary aesthetic of the ship and the attention to design and detail. Even though we've seen a hundred videos of the ship prior to sailing I felt like we were constantly discovering something new.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We had an S2 Sky Suite. This cabin is perfect. The bed faces the window so you can lie in bed and watch the ocean or the port if desired. The bathroom is spacious and we loved the separate water closet for privacy. Plenty of storage and space. Very happy that they removed those awkward oversized rocking chairs.

Ship tip

Experience this ship with an open mind and remove the expectations that this ship will be like other Celebrity Ships or other cruise ships for that matter. It's unique and stands alone.

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

3 out of 5
It's really just a port to board the ship or get off of the ship. It's a long trip and not very exciting trip to get there.

Naples, Italy

5 out of 5
We didn't go to Naples. We jumped on a high speed ferry to Capri and I hired a private boat to take us all around Capri for six hours. We had an amazing lunch, jumped in the water, saw all of the beautiful grottos and little unknown place. You couldn't pay me to get on a bus full of people and drive the Amalfi coast in Summer. I heard a lot of positive comments about the Pompeii excursions.

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

5 out of 5
Florence was stunning, we had never been. The train ride wasn't much fun to get there, but I booked that as an excursion on the ship just to be sure the ship would wait if there were any issues. However, I think the ship excursion should have allowed one more hour in Florence. 4.5 hours was a bit short. I prearranged a local guide to get us around and off the beaten path so we could maximize our time there.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

5 out of 5
Always a favorite. Easy to do a quick overview of Monte Carlo in a few hours. We had such a luxurious amount of time in port I hired a private guide to take us to Eze for lunch and a walk around the village and then to St. Paul de Vence for another walk around this ancient village. This is one of my favorite parts of the world and I was thrilled to share it with my partner and friends.

Cannes, France

3 out of 5
We had a nice stroll around the town and lunch. I give this the lowest rating because we had a short time in port so it wasn't worth getting a driver and heading to Grasse or Nice as I would have liked. There's not a lot to do and see in Cannes aside from the Palais and The Croisette.

Palma De Mallorca, Balearic Islands

5 out of 5
I was so surprised by Mallorca. It has never been on my radar and we just decided on a whim to take a bus over to the Cathedral. This lead us to impromptuly hiring a driver/guide and take us around the island to mountain villages and seaside restaurants and drives. We left totally charmed by this place. I have subsequently read that over tourism is hurting the island and that the local residents are trying to limit cruise ship activity and tourism to some degree. But we loved it.

Barcelona, Spain

5 out of 5
This was disembarkation port....but come on....It's Barcelona. We stayed for 3 days and had a wonderful time.

Disembarkation

We carried our luggage off and it was very easy.
