Review summary

This was our first holiday cruise. It was very odd to whale watch Christmas morning. Very cool though. We left 4 inches of snow to enjoy 80 degree weather. Loved it! The cruise overall was pretty good. On a 1-5 scale I would rate it a 4. The ship shows its age, but the maintenance staff does a good job with main public areas. Wished they had gotten to by daughter and son-in-law's cabin though. The electrical buzzing sound was creepy. Food at the restaurants was outstanding, but food at the buffets was just barely above edible. Don't book excursions through Carnival for Cabo San Lucas. There are TONS of options when you get off the boat and they cost less than half of what the ship charges.

Father used wheelchair. Took a bit, but we got one (previously ordered and listed as needed), but we got one and were on the ship by lunch time. We had FTTF so we had access to our rooms right away.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
AJ, Anster, and Deva were wonderful. Beverages were ready when we sat down, they allowed my daughter to pre-order food so they could meet her allergy issues (what a dream to know I didn't have to worry about allergens). Breakfasts in the sit-down restaurant were fabulous. We avoided buffets for the most part because the food wasn't great. As an example, we were going to eat at the buffet for breakfast the first morning. We scooped scrambled eggs and they were the consistency of watery grits. We left (seven of us) and went to the sit down breakfast...much better choice. I suggest ordering pineapple juice. It's not available at the buffet and it's the best!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Lots of different activities, and with three generations of family, at least one of us took part in most everything at one time or another. Very much fun. I did the Thelossotherapy pool spa package and recommend it highly. Not crowded, no kids and very relaxing. About $120 for the week.

Entertainment

His or miss here. Most singers in the stage shows sang well, but there were a couple of exceptions. Comedians were also hit or miss. One was so bad people (including me) were timing his exit...luckily, so was he. He knew he was bombing. He wasn't funny. He made fun of a guy for falling earlier in the day...but didn't make it funny.... The final straw was when he made fun of a paraplegic runner. We all boo'ed him off stage. I don't remember his name but I think I believe it had the word "butt" in it.

Children's Programs

Met people on the ship who had children at the children's programs and they commented on how well they were run.

Service and Staff

At the comedy show two waiters weren't paying attention and ran into each other with full trays of drinks. Glass, wine, and other liquor went everywhere, including on me and on others around me. They two guys went to the back and I waited for someone to come and clean up the mess, and ask if we were alright. After five minutes, without anyone doing anything, I got the attention of a waiter and let him know this area was a hazard. He rolled his eyes and said "someone had been called." The glass and ice was in the middle of the upstairs area by the bar. I had already brushed the glass off of myself. Another five minutes goes by and nothing. By this time a man had stepped on the base of a broken wine glass and it stuck in his sandal. He pulled it out and placed it on the bar. Another woman had slipped on the ice and the man with her caught her mid-air during the fall. Another five minutes had gone by and I asked the bartender for a broom. He just smiled at me and went about his work. A man sitting near me moved a chair over the biggest part of the mess so people would be warned. The men who had crashed into each other had gone back to delivering drinks...without any cleanup. I was REALLY mad by this time because even more people were slipping on ice, liquid, and glass. I spoke again to one of the men who crashed and he told me, "I have drinks to get out," and walked away. 21 minutes into this issue I spoke with a woman server named Grizelda (I think). She IMMEDIATELY got a broom and dust pan and cleaned up the mess...even though she wasn't involved. I told her one of the waiters said he had "called" for assistance and she let me know there is no one to call...just clean up. I appreciate her willingness to pitch in. She was funny, gracious, and a good team member. I can't say that for ANY of the other servers in the comedy room.

Ship Quality

Cleanliness was ok. I'm glad it's being refubished. Fried eggs and pink breasts are not a great design motif.

Cabin / Stateroom

We had beds made into two twin size. Never realized before they are smaller than twin size beds. Not by much, but enough to notice. Very comfortable though. My daughter and son-in-law's cabin was horrible (1067). Their refrigerator didn't work, their lights kept flashing, and then finally went out all together. Periodically throughout the first three days you could hear an odd "zzzing" sound like electrical issues. We were all afraid of fire. It was brought to the steward's attention and to customer service. Nothing....until electrical all went out. Refrigerator was never fixed.

Ship tip

There are four slot machines in the casino that have rows of money as their theme. All four machines pay well. I won about $700 overall. Other family members won as well.

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

Stayed at The Maya hotel. Not nearly as pretty as their pictures, but the staff was outstanding and made me want to visit again! They have a free shuttle to the ship. The shuttle can also take you to restaurants within two miles of the hotel. Important because hotel food was VERY expensive.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Spent Christmas morning whale watching...up close!!! Was hoping to go snorkeling but the water at Medano beach was so nasty with boat oil and stuff that we didn't feel it was a safe idea.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Las Caletas and Ziplining/Repelling were some of the excursions members of our group took part in. I wimped out and spent my day at the spa. Everyone had fun.

Disembarkation

A bit more training is needed by customer service staff. First level staff said all we needed to have ready was our drivers licenses...not true. You need your passport. Luckily I had them handy. The first person I was assisted by wasn't sure how I was to reach my shuttle (it was booked through Carnival). The manager let me know all I needed was my receipt. The process was quick, with the exception that one of my daughters forgot a bag and had to go back to the ship. As an FYI it's a two-plus hour process to wait for everyone to get off the ship, customs to go through every bag left behind, and then release all luggage for claiming. She almost missed our flight.
