Review summary

Our group had a great time. Already planning our next cruise as a group, our granddaughter loved having her parents and both sets of grandparents on trip with her. Luckily her Dad served as designated adult since mom and her grandparents were a little crazy having lots of fun.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Breakfast and dinner were always in MDR Gold Pearl early setting. Lunch on Lido or BBQ. Food in MDR was good we are not picky eaters so we always found something on menu that we liked. Granddaughter loved Mac n cheese along with chicken tenders with chocolate milk and her favorite dessert was ice cream. Happy granddaughter happy 6 adults! Really impressed with our Matre d (Mr Showwwwtimeee) and serving team led by Gladdie head waiter. Each of them spoiled our granddaughter and became her favorite part of dinner. They also provided excellent service to the adults and made our dining experience special each night.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Pools, mini golf and fitness center were all good.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Seems they were fixated on music from 1970 to 1990 including disco. I enjoyed the 70 to 90 music but not a big disco fan. Also enjoyed the guitar solo as a warm up for one of the shows. Just think 3 shows based on that time frame of music was overkill. House was packed on first formal night but not on the other show nights.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Per our granddaughter her favorite part of the cruise next to the MDR was the kid’s camp. She loved it especially making new friends. Her mom showed her the camp on the first day and from than on it was granddaughter who told her mom “I want to go to camp” you guys (the adults) are kind of boring. No filter on our little Taylor.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
In addition to MDR team our room steward (who handled all of our rooms) did a great job.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
She is showing her age but still remains our favorite Carnival ship. Areas we frequented were all clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We had a cove balcony room and loved it. The huge balcony allowed all 7 of us to enjoy the views during the various sail aways. Even though the others in our group had balcony’s they liked hanging out at ours which was fine with us. The layout of the room is funky but we really liked it.

Ship tip

Try the BBQ really liked it, much better in my opinion than the other Lido offerings.

Ports of call

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

Just overnight at Marriott. Note my wife and I cruise for the sea days not big fans of port calls, after multiple trips on this itinerary we are totally content to stay on ship.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Wife and I first visited Cabo in 1998 on the Carnival Holiday, been on this cruise 25 times (do not like cruising out of Florida and this port is close to our home in Utah) on Princess or Carnival. Interesting to see how port has grown and improved over the years but we both commented on how it is declining in our opinion. The vendors our out of control, the shops etc near the tender area are not as nice and clean as in the past. We hit Sr Frogs for chips and guacamole, wanted to use restrooms to wash up. Totally disgusting no running water just a bucket of used water to wash hands in and no need to discuss toilet conditions. Total gross out, left and headed back to ship. Wife and I are doing back to back on Splendor in SPA room this summer and will not get off in Cabo just enjoy the spa.

Mazatlan, Mexico

The only reason I get off in this port would be to play golf at Estrella Del Mar a beautiful course south of port right on the ocean/sea. Unfortunately Carnival only offers El Cid which I think is far less enjoyable than Estrella.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Wife and I did not get off ship the others visited the mall (impressed with it) and for laughs went to Walmart, pretty much what they expected. Although my daughter was impressed that you could have your car washed while shopping at Wally World.

Disembarkation

Pretty smooth up until point you grab your luggage. Kind of a sloppy process with port workers who provide conflicting info on how to leave one family member in the line while the other grabs luggage. Problem is to meet back up with the member in line you cut in front of others (which earns you some nasty glares from those in line) and some port workers will not open up fencing to get back in line when other port worker tells you they will. This area lends itself to a bottleneck since you must line up to go thru customs with your luggage. Hopefully they can improve the flow thru luggage area since everything else is great.
