Review summary

My family and I cruise once a year but I can honestly say after our experience on the Carnival Splendor last week, we will never cruise Carnival again, and maybe never cruise again.

I can pinpoint the under cooked over-easy eggs I was served in the dining room on Saturday December 26th.  I started having diarrhea within 2 hours.  I did not report it to the cruise line because we were getting off the ship the next morning and my goal was to get home to my own bed.  After the most miserable flight(s) home, a trip to urgent care, 2 trips to ER, and $1000 later in co-pays, I was admitted to the hospital for Salmonella poisoning, with complications of Acute Pancreantitis.  I have months of recovery ahead of me.

When I called to report it upon leaving the hospital, I was clearly told they would make note of it, but they are not obligated financially to do anything.  I asked that a manager call me back to be assured it is reported and that I would send the proof that it was Salmonella poisoning.  I ate nothing once leaving the ship, so it is 100% certainty that I got it on that boat.

Aside of that, the ship is old, food was so-so.
We had a room at the back of the ship - which had a beautiful balcony, however, unless you are prepared for rocking side to side (extreme) and shaking bad enough things fall off the shelf every time you port, don't get a room on the back of the boat.
Fitness room is terrible.  They even built the windows wrong so when you are on the treadmill, you can't see out of the boat.  Embarkation was a nightmare.  took 3 hours which has never happened.

NEVER will we cruise Carnival again.

This seems a little far fetched. We were on the Pride, a smaller ship, in a Category 4 Hurricane, at the back of the ship, and stuff didn't fall off shelves. In the dining room, a few things, yes. If you ordered your eggs a certain way, you had to have known they weren't made correctly, right?

Now now be kind. Next help each other have a good time. Peace to all.

Ps we don't want to cruise with people like you anyways so keep your whiny ass at home! You're probably someone who goes to a restaurant and doesn't tip too

Suck it up buttercup! You could have cancer with a month to live and people with cancer would die to be in your shoes! Such cry babies these days. Itis means inflammation aka not months of healing. A week or two.

There is a 1 in 20,000 chance that an egg is contaminated with Salmonella. Two hours is very quick to get food poisoning...that would have meant that the egg was full of toxins when you ate an egg filled with bacteria. I guess that could have happened, but I doubt you got it from that egg. Now the acute pancreatitis diagnosis is interesting...thats what most likely caused your illness.

I was on that 12/20-27 Splendor. We always order over med. our trip was nice for the 9 of us. On and off went well. Sorry you had problems.

I have an aft balcony on the splendor October 8. I had an aft balcony on the conquest last November and loved it. There was some vibration but it was not enough to knock stuff off of shelves. I think Chicagoguy should have gone on cruise critic and trip advisor before booking his/her aft balcony... Clearly there are reviews that talk of the motion in the aft area cabins.... Do some research!!

I think the flight might have been bad because of a case of the squirts, but I'm only guessing.

so you hated it, and will never cruise again for some bad eggs.... the flight has nothing to do with carnival

Every menu has a consumer advisory warning about eating raw or undercooked meat, seafood, eggs, etc. If you want to eat it that way they will fix it but the result is on you. Over easy is undercooked.

ive been on lots of cruises over 15 years. I learned from my earlier cruises that best rooms for me was midship, I'll always have balconies or ocean views at mid-ship. if the eggs was undercooked you should have sent it back or ate something else. I'm sorry that you got sick and I hope you feel better soon but it could have been other foods may be from one of the islands. .. I have cruise other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean etc.. but I have found Carnival Cruise Line has been the best cruise line I've been on. now I have never been on splendor but I am in 17 days and I'm looking forward to it and I'll make note not to eat raw eggs..

I think people eat raw egg and they don't see a problem with this

I was on that same sailing as chicagogirl. Even though she is giving her thoughts and opinions from her experiences with the ship. My thoughts of the ship is completely different. I thoroughly enjoyed the Carnival Splendor and the Decor of her. Even with all of the PINK. And I mean PINK. Lol. My wife and I enjoyed the buffet breakfast, buffet lunch and snacks. The MDR menu had its hit and misses. We had dinner at the Steakhouse on board, and that was amazing. As for the disembarkation process, Kevin the cruise director made it very clear on how to proceed with getting off the ship. Apparently she chose which she thought was best for her. It took my wife and I to 30 minutes to disembark once our zone was called. And another 20 minutes to go through customs. I also enjoyed all of the ports that we had visited except for Costa Maya. And that is only because my wife and I didn't bother to get off the ship.

I doubt it was the eggs. I never order over easy eggs from restaurants because the whites are always undercooked. That's actually what over-easy means. If you like the white cooked fully and the yellow still gooey then what you should ask for is over medium. Also we specifically chose splendor because we love the throwback vibes. Going on this weekend!

banaford    8 years ago

Yes ihatewinter..he is a she..I stand corrected. So I would also assume.

andrenatsmom    8 years ago

I'm sorry you are feeling poorly. I will admit that I feel your review or opinion seems a little skewed because of not feeling well. Did you only stay on the ship your entire cruise? Did you eat anywhere else? Did you not feel comfortable sending the food back? I loved the throw back feel of the Splendor! Maybe you could choose another ship and room location before you totally give up on cruising. Get well soon

ihatewinter    8 years ago

First off her user name is chicagogirl, he is a she. Second or "B" if I was served uder cooked eggs I would have sent them back or at least not eaten them. "C" or third the best rooms are balcony, 6 or 7 and lastly I'm sure Carnival wasn't happy that it took 3 hour to empty the "ship" (boats hang off the side).

banaford    8 years ago

He got eggs over easy. It is a real egg. Wonder if he ate anywhere on the islands. I would think others would have it.
