Review summary

Took a friend with me after another bailed.  I paid for the cruise and she was supposed to cover the drink package.  Carnival told her she had to buy 2 drink packages, one for me and one for her.  She told them she was a recovering alcoholic and they told her it didn't matter.  She instead bought a few bottles for me to have in the room.  Problem with that is she now had alcohol right in front of her.  I didn't find out she had a drinking problem until the third day.  She ended up drinking most of what was in the room and then started buying drinks at the bars.  I guess it was a way for Carnival to make money and ruin someone's life at the same time.  She hadn't had a drink in 4.5 years before this trip and now is back in rehab.  So I spent $2600 before stepping on the boat and ended up babysitting her through the whole trip.  I know of a lot of other things that I could do that are way better than a cruise for $2600.  I really truly believe that if she was able to buy one drink package then the urge and pressure would not have been so great for her to drink.  She had been around me many times while I was drinking and never wanted one.  Thanks Carnival!!!

Here's a thought. Never put alcohol in the cabin with a recovering alcoholic. She could have paid for 2 drink programs and ordered soft drinks, juices or club sodas at the bars. I am afraid this fiasco is on you, Carnival clearly states that every adult in each cabin must pay for the Cheers program if you want to participate. I am sure people have shared drinks in the past and this is why they do that now.  You can always order drinks at the bar and pay per drink, it is expensive.

Putting an alcoholic in charge of the alcohol is never a wise decision. You're an adult walk to the bar yourself, you NEVER had to have alcohol in your room. To blame Carnival is ridiculous.

4.5 years since she had a drink, I think more like 4.5 days since she drank. If you're a lush you can't blame Carnival.

I'm seeing a pattern here.....

You didn't know u til day 3? The purchased bottles instead of the cheers package should have tipped you off.

There are plenty of people that could blame Carnival for their drinking problem but it's really their own choices to blame. Why didn't you just charge your drinks to room and just have her pay the bill if the drink package wouldn't work? Really there are so many options but let's just blame Carnival.

Carnival doesn't require you to buy a drink package. If you are a recovering alcoholic why in the world would you buy a alcohol package? That's your own fault.

Doesn't sound like you did a good babysitting job. It's not carnivals fault sounds more like she felt pressure to by alcohol for you.

Your Story and the Comments are pure comedy. Thanks for the laugh!

You may have not known until day 3 of the cruise that she was a "recovering" alcoholic but SHE DID...and she agreed to pay for the drink packages? She's been off the sauce for 4.5 years and STILL has a weak control over her desire? Sorry but your pointing the blame in the wrong direction! Why didn't she just agree to cover your portion of the drinks as they were charged to your cabin account as opposed to being "FORCED" to buy both packages. She could have just gave you cash at the end of the cruise to cover just your drinks as ALL charges are listed on your final folio!

You could have just paid the fee required for the 2 packages but just drank virgin drinks...your just mad they wanted you to buy 2 packages because you didn't do your homework before hand to k ow it was required for everyone in the room to have the package.

OMG!!! Really? It's Carnivals fault that she is a recovering alcoholic? Even if she did not buy alcohol for you, there are bars all over the ship. If her willpower is that weak, a cruise vacation might not be for her. Besides that, there are meetings for recovering alcoholics on every cruise I have been on. Let her take responsibility for her actions instead of blaming Carnival.

Wow-----what a good friend you are. Shame on Carnival for forcing her to drink!!! LOL

alemmon3825    8 years ago

Your the one that put booze in front of her I don't see how that's the boats fault

mark3570    8 years ago

She was around you many times and you didn't know???? Get over it, its not Carnivals fault she drank, it's her own fault. We are all responsible for ourselves. Really now, grow up!!!

Lol! You took a recovering alcoholic on a cruise ship and expected her to pay for your drink package! Lol! Then you blame the cruise ship because she fell off the wagon and ended up back in rehab! Lmao!!!!! What the Hell is wrong with you?!!!! Lol!

Pinkie60    8 years ago

Even if she didn't buy the drink package or had a bottle in the room, she still would have fallen off the wagon. There are bars everywhere on a ship. Nope she was going to drink regardless of what you did. She is not a recovering but still a hard core alcholic. Don't blame the cruise line, you made a poor choice for a shipmate.

Unbelievable, you go on a cruise with a friend and dont know they are a recovering alcoholic, yeah right. It's not Carnival's fault its yours, you made her buy you drinks, you should of been more supportive to a friend. Carnival, is supportive of AA members they have meeting on every cruise. If your friend really had a problem help was avaiable just not from you. GROW UP!!!!

So, it's Carnival's fault your other friend bailed, you take an alcoholic instead and their requirement for the Cheers package is that all adults assigned to the room must purchase it?? Get over it.....
