Review summary

Overall we enjoyed our cruise. There were some misses and there were some really good things. Disappointment in the food. pleasently surprised with some of the entertainment. We had two unusual things happen on this trip. Skagway had a rock slide that damaged the pier preventing us from using it on the day we were supposed to arrive. The Captain and his crew worked it to where we could go to Juneau and then go to Skagway. Great job done! Last sea day we had a total power failure which we went dead in the water. The Captain kept everyone appraised of the situation and the crew had us going again within the hour.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was very good. Carnival has you pick a time to show up so they can stagger the embarkation process. We chose 3:30 to 4. We arrived at our assigned time and were checked in and onboard within 30 minutes.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
I understand that food can be a controversial subject as everybody has different tastes. With that said we were extremely disappointed in the quality of the food in the MDR and buffet. MDR we did not receive a hot meal in 14 days. Luke warm at best and not a lot of flavor. Buffet was not much better for lunch or dinner. Now with that said the Pizza was awesome and the grill was pretty good. Chopsticks was open for lunch that was good. We did go to the steak house. I usually find these worth the money. Sadly I would say not to waste your money. I ordered my steak med/rare received a med/well cold steak. I did send it back and the steak i got back was cooked properly. but by that time my wife was done and the side were cold.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
There was plenty to do if you wanted. The naturalist gave excellent talks on the plots and the wildlife you may see.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Punchliners was excellent. The musicians around the ship were fantastic. The main shows in the theater were ok.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff we interacted with were excellent. Friendly and always willing to help. Our room steward awesome our MDR staff excellent. The only thing I thought was odd was in the buffet. Numerous times we walked by several tables that needed bussed and it did not happen. Saw passengers bussing tables so they could use the table.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Ship is older and can be a little dark in spots. There were a lot of spots on the ship that could use a good cleaning.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Overall the cabin was clean and in decent repair. Good sized shower and decent sized cabin. It is a totally obstructed view.

Ship tip

Serenity area on the back of the ship is adult only and a very nice place to hang out.

Ports of call

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

3 out of 5
Embarkation Port. If you are not from the area the Queen Mary is there if you would like to visit an old cruise ship and a piece of history.

Ketchikan, Alaska

4 out of 5
Always enjoy this port.

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

5 out of 5
Now that the dock is in this is a nice place to visit. Easy to walk around and good food right by the ship. Nice little nature trail and there is a shuttle into hoonah for a small fee. It is about a two mile walk into the town.

Skagway, Alaska

4 out of 5
Always up for Skagway Brewery. It it is your First visit the train is nice to go on.

Juneau, Alaska

4 out of 5
Whale watching here is usually pretty good. The Mt. Roberts tram is enjoyable. Don't forget about Mendenhall Glacier.

Sitka, Alaska

5 out of 5
One of my favorite places to visit in Alaska. The sail in and out are beautiful. The town is enjoyable to walk around. There are hiking trails and always can find a water excursion to find whales and otters. Keep your eyes open when you are walking around Bald eagles are usually seen. Sitka National Historic park is about a roughly a 30 minute walk from where the bus drops you off.

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

1 out of 5
Vancouver is a big city.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
We arrived clearance took awhile, not carnival's fault. But the process was pretty slow.

Hey clferr, for us on the food everything was cold. I'm not one that requires it to be steaming hot. However I don't care for cold. We got Luke warm to cold in the dining room. The steak house well my steak was not prepared problerly and was cold when it was delivered. To be fair I sent it back and it was returned cooked properly and nice and warm. 30 minutes later. I was just a little disappointed is all.

Yeah was a first for us too! Power and propulsion went out. Thankfully it was in the middle of the day. What exactly was wrong with the food? We thought it was awesome and the steak house was beyond words! You can't even buy a good steak for $35.! Wish we had found the band that played in the Red Frog pub at the beginning and not the last nite! They were great! Guess that's what happens when you don't out after 10! Room steward Lauro and Novella were the best! Only problem we had was my husband got a glass of wine that was either stale or something. It was awful. They have started to nickel and dime with trying to upgrade to more shots in your drink, but other than that it was a great cruise and will be booking again for next year!

DOUBLED - gotta let you know EVERY cruise ship has their own generators aboard to make electricity. Either that, or very, very long extensions cords from the ports.

that ship is getting old, they do carry there own generator on board should been a clue

You experienced two mishaps that probably no other cruise in history has experienced. A rockslide closing a port, and loss of power at sea. Lucky? Cursed?
