Review summary

I would never sail on the Luminosa again. Most everyone I chatted with all felt the same way about the Luminosa. The excursions were amazing but the ship was sub par to the other ships they sailed on. The chatter around the decks was generally people complaining

Embarkation

Went smoothly to get on the ship

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
The food was just ok except for the hamburgers and some of the food on the comfort kitchen buffet. The rest of the food was uneventful for flavor and the desserts were seldom anything worth eating. The main dining room had better quality food but the service was hit or miss and the hostesses were generally rude to people.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
If I brought children with me would have been great but not enough diversity for choices for adults that didn’t involve purchases

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The entertainment was good but trying to find a seat in the small spaces was difficult. Often you had to stand for the comedy shows or opt not to see them. The one I was able to see was very funny.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Our room Steward Rudi was amazing but the rest of them was just ok. Staff didn’t keep up on clearing tables so often couldn’t find a place to sit without having to push dirty dishes over until someone cleared them, guest services had 3 people I would say were great but one woman that was quite sarcastic and could care less about going over and above with a circumstance we were dealing with regarding our cabin that was very important.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
It was a normal Carnival layout and staff kept areas clean overall. Always mopping and sweeping.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
We actually had to change to Cabim #6237 because #6359 smelled like an ashtray. It took me the entire first day to get moved due to how bad cigarette smoke makes me sick. One person in guest services helped in the beginning and instructed me to call Carnival and see if there were any open cabins. Found out there were 3. Went back to Guest Services and spoke to the curt woman who sarcastically laughed at me and asked why I would think the man at carnival would know since they have people on standby at the port waiting. So she would prefer to give a cabin to a standby person instead of me when I informed them that smoke makes me sick. Per there instructions I waited until 4pm when the ship sailed to see if there was a room and turned out one of the rooms the Carnival rep gave me was the one we moved to. So we weren’t able to get comfortable in a cabin all day and the anxiety of being stuck in a cabin that would make me nauseous, have a headache 24/7 and cause me breathing issues was overwhelming and should have been rectified immediately. Even Rudi our steward said the original cabin smelled terrible and they tried to deodorize it and had us check it a 1/2 hr later. You can’t make a room smell better quickly when someone was smoking in there often. With regard to overall cabin that we stayed in: it was plenty big enough, kept clean, the bed mattress was so firm it was like sleeping on the floor but that is personal preference for firmness. Everything else was just fine about the room.

Ship tip

Know that the excursions are amazing and the beauty of Alaska but choose a different ship
