Review summary

I had been to the interior of Alaska many times during my years in the military but my wife had never been there. We both thoroughly enjoyed this coastal area cruise. Wildlife was certainly not as plentiful as it may have been in the spring but we did see some through binoculars - be sure to bring those binocs! The day in Glacier Bay National Park was a highlight with beautifully clear weather (glad we brought layers of clothing.) Even were treated to calving of a glacial face.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
As Diamond members we have absolutely no complaints regarding embarkation and debarkation. All was handled flawlessly.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Each of these areas always exceed out expectations

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We no longer partake in most on-board activities. Serenity area is a nice place.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Shows on this cruise were very good but we've seen even better with Carnival.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Excellent service from Ronnie and his wait staff Putu and Ketut. They were always cheerful and attentive despite their heavy workload. Our room steward Gusti did an excellent job, always keeping our cabin and laundry ship-shape.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Ship is beginning to age but the crew works very hard on upkeep and cleanliness. This class is one of our favorite designs - good size and easy to get around.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We have found this category of cabin suits us well as the best balance between cost and convenience. Wife has a problem with claustrophobia and the balcony cabins take care of that. Would definitely recommend balcony cabin for the Alaskan cruise. It provided a non-stop access to the natural wonders of this cruise.

Ship tip

Those with COPD should avoid the Promenade (deck 2) which has poor ventilation from the casino smoke.

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington Did not visit port

Been there, done that.

Juneau, Alaska

Had a wonderful and very informative time touring the beautiful Mendenhall glacier.

Skagway, Alaska

Everyone recommends the train ride to White Pass Summit. Since we had ridden Amtrak the previous week and were going on the Rocky Mountaineer the week following this cruise, we elected to do the White Pass Summit by bus. We were very pleased with this tour which was very informative, funny, and ran basically the same route as the train. Train would be a great option if you've never ridden a train.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Visited the Totem Village State Park and would have enjoyed an even longer visit there were it not for the cold rain the day of our visit. Fascinating place with great tour guide.

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

5 out of 5
Stayed three days in Vancouver and thoroughly enjoyed this city. Used the 2-day option for the Hop on-Hop Off bus to tour the various parts of the city. Took a great whale watching tour with Prince of Whales and another full-day excursion to Vancouver Island, Butchart Gardens and Victoria. Highly recommend this area for it's cleanliness, friendliness and scenic wonders.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Smooth - walked right off, collected our bags and were done.
