Review summary

We were excited to visit the ports of call on Carnival Glory's "Exotic" western Caribbean itinerary, but then Hurricane Dean changed all that. So for the two cruises before ours Carnival had replaced Costa Maya and Belize with Key West and Progresso. We were not excited. But two days before our cruise Carnival called to tell us we would go to Belize, and replaced Costa Maya with Roatan, Honduras. That was great news. We were not disappointed. Our visits to Cozumel, Belize and Roatan were wonderful. These are great ports with lots to do and things to see. We went as a large family group (six couples). Our excursions included Mayan ruins, snorkeling, and self-guided shopping tours.

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

In place of Costa Maya, we visited Roatan. Our family went snorkeling at Gumbalimba park. They have a delightful park staff and we really had a great time there. Again, we would have liked to have had more time there, but know that the greater distance caused our early departure.

Don't Miss: This a beautiful island. The reef snorkeling is world class.

Nassau, Bahamas

In place on Nassau we went to Freeport. Grand Bahama is a beautiful island, but Freeport is not a beautiful place. We enjoy our visits there, but get away from town.

Belize City, Belize

We went with an excursion through Carnival since they had one to a Mayan Ruin we specifically wanted to see. However, flooding on a river near the site kept us away from Xunatunich. The tour company immediately made all plan changes needed and took us to Cahal Pech instead. The ruin was wonderful and our guides very helpful. This tour included lunch at a ranch in the country which was especially delightful.

Cozumel, Mexico

I have been to Cozumel many times, so we rented a van and did a self-guided island tour. We did a lot of shopping, which this place is very good for. We also visited San Gervasio Mayan Ruins and spent a short time on the beach on the east side of the island. My only regret is that we didn't have a little more time for that island.
