We have cruised Princess a number of times and will do again if the right itinerary comes along on a more modern ship but this cruise was very average
Embarkation
4 out of 5
Good but the Canadian immigration lady could do with taking the treating people civilly course
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
2 out of 5
Food was very average and a disappointment after enjoying better on previous Princess cruises. Dining room was very hit and miss with beef dishes poor quality cuts. The usual gripe of the food not being hot enough was evident throughout in line with many cruise lines.
Our biggest issue was the time it took to get food from the kitchen which meant that dinner would take up 2 hours most nights which is excessive for what is now a 3 course menu with coffee. Fortunately the nice people on our table meant that the time was well spent but did mean that the show was full by the time we arrived
The buffet was ok but the food layout was confusing with some different items in different area. The omelette station is now only in one area and the waiting list was so long that most people gave up and didn’t bother- a shame to economise on this.
The Italian restaurant was superb but the BBQ did not look appetising
Onboard Activities
2 out of 5
The ship is old and has few facilities but the fitness centre was good but small
Entertainment
3 out of 5
The main stage has a relatively small capacity that requires you to get a seat at least 20 minutes before the start
We were turned away on a number of occasions
However the bars do have good entertainment most nights although for Uk travellers the prices for beers and drinks generally is very high now and substantially more than a recent RCI Pacific cruise
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
Waiters were effective but could do nothing to get the food to the table in a timely manner
Room Steward was quiet but very efficient
Guest Services genuinely tried to assist
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
Very clean but the layout is dated and the ship does not really have the sea worthiness for the weather on the Canadian leg.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
Cabin seemed smaller than normal balcony with a dresser but no seperate seating area which we like
The large TV was a bonus but it is sited at head height as you go onto the balcony resulting in a few head bangs
The cabin was clean throughout
I thought we had seen the last of small showers with the dreaded plastic curtains but no they are still present here
Ship tip
May be a disappointment if you have sailed other Princess ships
The Princess Cruise Terminal in Brooklyn is miles from anywhere and means that you have to leave about 90 minutes each way to get into Downtown which leaves very little time to explore
We looked with envy on the other cruise lines who had there ships in the Manhattan terminal right in the centre of things
