Review summary

The cruise was wonderful! Now that I know more about how cruises work, if I go again, I will know what to ask and look for in an itinerary and ammenities that are important to me.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We were onboard with a drink in our hand by 11:00am. The whole process was smooth and efficient.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
We had the drink package, which included bottled water, soda, coffee and alcoholic drinks. A few stand out bartenders include Luke at the Lobby Bar and Arnold at the Crooners Martini Bar. We usually ate the buffet for breakfast, something light for lunch (a slice of pizza from the lido deck or a sandwich from the International Café) and then went all out for our dinners in the main dining rooms. We had any time dining and enjoyed the flexibility. The food was much better than I expected, simply knowing that they were preparing such high quantities of food at the same time. The desserts were my favorite part each night! I would also highly recommend The Crown Grille if you are steak lover.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Each night we went to a show either in the theater or in the smaller venues (lounges or bars). Some of our favorites included the piano performance in the theater, The Marriage Game, The Yes/No Game and the Liar's Game. There were also many fun activities in the Piazza, such as the captain's champagne pouring or the balloon drop. There were lots of movies throughout the day and night outside on the Lido Deck. The afternoon tea was great. There are lots of activities, so there is always something to do if you are looking for it.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The cruise director's staff was very personable during the game shows and trivia they lead. We went to the Sky Walker's Lounge on one of the first nights and requested a specific song that fit the night's theme. DJ Brickhouse would play that song for us each time we came to dance after that and was very engaging with us and the other guests.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our steward, Smit, was wonderful and we had many staff members who went above and beyond throughout our trip!

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
This was my first cruise and the ship design seemed very guest friendly. I did not have any problems finding places in particular. Everything seemed tidy and clean throughout the ship.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The beds were extremely comfortable. I was nervous about the size of the bathrooms since this was my first cruise and I had heard that cruise bathrooms are small, but I was pleasantly surprised. There was plenty of space for clothing in the area outside the bathroom. We were not in the room much (just for sleeping and getting ready), so for our purposes it was just what we needed.

Ship tip

There were some days on sea that got rough because of 10-15 foot waves, so be sure to pack sea sickness medication if this might affect you. I have never been sea sick before, but these waves did a number on me one day and it seemed like this was typical for that part of the ocean because we were so far away from land on our way to the canal.

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida Did not visit port

We just drove in to embark and disembark.

Princess Cays (Cruise Line Private Island)

5 out of 5
Beautiful private island for either a relaxing beach day or water sports. They set up bars on land where you can use your drinks package and serve you basic barbecue food for lunch. We were the only ship there and there were plenty of lounge chairs to relax on.

Cartagena, Colombia

5 out of 5
We took a cab to the Old Town and enjoyed walking around the area. Stunning historical buildings. There are a lot of peddlers who haggle, so if this makes you uncomfortable, be aware ahead of time. Our time in Columbia was limited so we weren't able to see much, but I really enjoyed what we were able to take in.

Panama Canal (Cruise Into Canal)

5 out of 5
Once in a lifetime experience. The history is facinating and it is awesome to watch everything come to life as you travel through the canal. It is a long day, so be prepared.

Colon, Panama Did not visit port

We wanted to stay on the ship to watch travel through the canal a second time.

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

5 out of 5
We took a cab to hike on a rain forrest trail. We stopped for fresh fruit, local beers and rum along the way. Again, we did not have a long time in port, so we weren't able to do as much as I would have liked, but the experiences we di have were awesome!

George Town, Grand Cayman

3 out of 5
Our time in Grand Cayman was cut short, so we only had time to walk around near the port. There were tons of jewelry shops and places to eat, but I was hoping to have time to explore the island more. This port was also quite a bit more expensive and more touristy than other stops.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Very smooth process. We did walk-off for 7:40 and we were in our vehicle and on the road by 8:30am.

I'll be comparing my 1st cruise on CP to my 2nd one on Carnival Valor in May. CP is going to be hard to beat but I'm excited either way.
