Review summary

This was our first cruise as passengers. We both worked on cruise ships years ago. We are now hooked as passengers and our son loved it too. Although he now wants to be a Captain and not a Chief Engineer.... We'll work on that though.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We arrived an hour ahead of our allotted time but we were still straight on-board in a matter of moments.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We really enjoyed the food in our main restaurant. The kids menu was limited but they were happy to adapt items on the main menu. We only used the self service Horizon restaurant a couple of times as it was somewhat chaotic in there at peak times.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Limited activities on-board. The daytime presentations run by the spa are simply sales pitches for the next best thing that's going to fix all your various ills.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
I used to work on Disney cruises so P&O were always going to struggle to top those shows. Main theatre is also small for the size of Britannia.

Children's Programs

4 out of 5
Good facilities but he only visited them twice in the week we were on-board.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Great staff who couldn't do enough to help make the cruise special. Some not so chirpy as others but you'll always get that.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Spot on. But I did note that there was not so much focus on hand washing for passengers as with American run cruise ships. I didn't see any sanitizing of stair handrails as an example, all week.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
We had a balcony cabin over looking the stern. There was sometimes soot on the balcony but only minimal amounts and our steward done a great job of keeping it clean. It proved to be a great sun trap on the way out to Norway. We also had parents travelling in the next cabin so our steward opened up the divider giving us a large double balcony.

Ship tip

Lunch at the Glass House and afternoon drinks in the Crows Nest.

Ports of call

Southampton (London), England

4 out of 5

Stavanger, Norway

4 out of 5
A bit of a commercial town but the maritime museum was interesting.

Olden, Norway

5 out of 5
Beautiful but tiring walk to the Glacier. Top tip..... walk there but take the Troll car back.

Flam

5 out of 5
Flam railway is a must do. If you are happy to take the risk, tickets may be available on the day and are half the price of P&O excursion. We got on fine.

Bergen, Norway

4 out of 5
Nice walk around town but we left at 14.30 so not long really. Great trip on the funicular for amazing view of the ship in the bay.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
We were off over an hour ahead of our allotted time.

Chief, Congrats on your 'first' cruise (lol)! I too share your experience. I always remember and relate my first Med cruise after the Navy - yes, it costs more, but the ship and crew certainly treated me better. Congrats to you both. I also hope Happy Retirements are in order for you both.
