Adventure of the Seas

5 Night Western Caribbean (Galveston Roundtrip)

Sail date: January 21, 2022

Review summary

This was our first time with Royal. The boat was our biggest issue. Very outdated and left a lot to be desired. I would sail with them again on a newer boat. Shore excursions were good which made up for some lackluster onboard options. We got an insanely good price on this cruise so I felt like I mostly got what I paid for.

Embarkation

Easier than ever to get on the ship

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Main dining for breakfast and lunch was not good. Dinner was decent every night. Buffet was pretty consistent. Too many extra charge restaurants and they are constantly trying to upsell you.

Duck & Dog Pub

3 out of 5

Went here almost every day. Service was hit or miss. Consistently served flat soda with our mixed drink and had to pay for a can to make it right. Musicians can be loud at times and hard to enjoy to atmosphere.

Windjammer Marketplace

5 out of 5

Most consistent dining location. Consistent every day.

Schooner Bar

4 out of 5

Love the atmosphere. Live sports on and piano player was awesome!! Drinks were inconsistent and not a lot of staff for as many tables they have.

Main Dining Room

4 out of 5

Love the multi level dining rooms. Our table had a nice view and we were sat by ourselves. Staff was great and remembered your drink preferences. Food was just "alright" for dinner most days. Was not impressed with breakfast and lunch.

Johnny Rockets

1 out of 5

Avoid. Not worth the upcharge. Food looks nothing like the pictures. All desserts are an additional upcharge from the already $10 a person for a terrible meal.

Ben and Jerry's

4 out of 5

Great taste. Questionable consistency. Since it's attached to coffee location you can get ice cream at 7AM

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Rock climbing and flowrider were fun and unique. Ice skating was also a blast. Hot tubs were usually overcrowded.

Rock Climbing Wall

5 out of 5

Super fun and free! I unique experience and a great workout.

Casino Royale

4 out of 5

Pretty well up to date casino. Lots of new machines you would find at any Vegas casino. Quarter pusher was our favorite! A little crammed to walk through is only negative thing.

Center Ice Rink

5 out of 5

A fun activity to do! They do a good job of limiting the amount of people on the ice so you can get a nice 30 minute skate. A nice free activity you can't get on most cruises.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
Other than a few soloist and the piano guy, the entertainment here was unwatchable. Guy doing Harry Potter trivia has never seen the movies and couldn't pronounce the characters names.

Library

1 out of 5

Only 5 books....

Children's Programs

No kids

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Staff was very friendly. They were definitely working for a good review but it did not take away from the great service.

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
Ship is very outdated. Needs a upgrade ASAP. I'm sure this ship was state of the art 20 years ago but now it's just tacky.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Bed was mostly uncomfortable. Other than that it was good. Wasn't a very good time of year to have a balcony.

Ship tip

They serve mixed drinks with soda from a 2 liter. It's usually extremely flat. I'd recommend buying a can of soda to go with your drink. The soda plan is not worth it. There are only 4 freestyle machines on the whole boat and they are constantly out of most options.
