Adventure of the Seas

7 Night Southern Caribbean (San Juan Roundtrip)

Sail date: May 13, 2017

Ship: Adventure of the Seas

Cabin type: Suite

Cabin number: 1654

Traveled as: Couple

Review summary

Cruisers beware, the ship is NOT completely renovated. Don Johnson 1990's state rooms, hall ways welcome you to this tired ship. 2016 renovations were not completed as advertised. Deck 5, 11 pool area appear to be completed the rest of the ship left port in 2001.

Lets talk food, 2 specialty resturants, Chop's Steakhouse can't cook a steak to order, why because the majority of food is made earlier in the day and flash heated / steam trayed for service. 3 Fillet Mignon's ordered Med Rare, all well done, 4th ordered rare to out fox the chef, finally got close. If you like Sizzler or Old Country Buffet food, then this cruise is for you. No evening buffet, same old same old, day after day, menu nemoriezed by day 2. 1st day nice yellow bananna's which you had to ask for, each day after selection became more ripened, brown spots gallore, thank god it wasn't 2 weeks. Forget papaya, kiwi, mango, Caribbean exotic fruits, expect hard apples, same fruit cocktail, green oranges etc. Pastry were horrible. Teramagoo not tiramisu, never had a glob of tiramisu should have known by the serving bowl. Someone from NYC or Jersey, please show the chef how to make a Cannoli, no crunch, whip cream filling, gross. Tarts were gooey. Thanks to this experience, I now know what to expect at the end of my life in a retirement home.

3 days prior to cruising, RC had knowledge of St. Lucia port closure. Though constant barrage of emails to sell you something, the port closure was not communicated prior to sailing. Passengers were afforded the info after the safety drill 1st day. Anyone who booked excurions on their own (recommend) not through the overpriced short excurions offered by the cruiseline, had to scramble at sea.

If you are first time cruisers without a benchmark of what Royal Caribbean or other lines typically offer or one could expect (and shown on RC's own commercials of other ships in your cabin) then this is your cruise ship. If you have cruised on anything other than Carnival, then you will be gravely dissapointed. Throwing some lipstick on the old pig in the veranda and hiring Sizzlers chef doesn't float the boat.

Unfortunately, the people who you will engage face to face have to apply the lipstick every day. No complaints about any of the staff we met. We felt sorry them actually, 12hr days, 7 days a week exploited labor in my opinion.  Just think, they have the task of serving the slop, raking the stables (state rooms),  and milking the passengers (constantly selling), ALL for corporate profit at the passengers cost, a true Adventure at Sea. If you booked future sailings on Adventure of the Seas before Jan 2018 dry dock, run!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Close your eyes, no you are not eating at Sizzler or Old Country buffet, its Royal...

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Certain areas of the ship seemed dedicated to ethnic groups were limited by space which if given a larger area would have felt more welcoming to people outside the ethnic group because it looked like the area was having fun.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Cruise entertainment ditector was fabulously funny.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Not applicable to our experience

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All crew members you have direct contact with are great. Behind the scenes, chef, corporation are the issue.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
The ship is dated. Seems like they are limping port to port until dry dock. Renovations scheduled for 2016 were not completed due to hurrican. Veranda was renovated, specialty resturants Chops and Guovani are your only choices outside of main dining, Windjamner buffet and Jonny Rockets.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Tired worn out cabins... ALL of them. Cut caused by main door in bath door covered with peeling wall paper, stains in carpet, replaced light fixtures that didn't match each other, drawers loose worn, sewer smell no trap in sink, sink worn out, nice pink and sea foam green Miami Vice decor. You know the age of pictures in hallways, check out the padded shoulders of womens pant suits circa 1990's

Ship tip

Run far away. Book after next dry dock or later.

Ports of call

San Juan, Puerto Rico

5 out of 5
Use Uber, outside airport, way better experience than over priced taxi. Must see Old Town, get the Pina Colada at Barrachina and stumble to Raices for the Mofongo. La Bombonera has great Lattes and pasteries not to mention terrific lemonaide, fresh squeezed. Take the water taxi ferry $1 round trip from Old Town to Catano for the Bacardi Rum factory tour. Beware, the guy at the Catano port is not a Bacardi employee, its a taxi. Uber if you have 3 or more in your party. Taxi is $3 per person. Uber is $5.75.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

5 out of 5
Save your money for drinks at MoHo beach, take the public bus two blocks from port, $2 each way, AC private vans, easy and you get some local culture.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

5 out of 5
Go private, rent the ATV for the day. Capture every tour offered by ship in one day, we saw the fort, plantation, train, beaches, look out point and the entite island in 6 hours on our own. Drivers and people were freindly even when they drove on the wrong side of the road LOL

St. John's, Antigua

5 out of 5
Segway tour is the best, go on line to book

Castries, St. Lucia Did not visit port

Never made it, port closed Royal Caribbean notified passengers knowing days before that we were not going to St. Lucia. Now fighting for 50% lost to excursion because cancellation policy.

Bridgetown, Barbados

3 out of 5
Like the ship, worn out. Beaches getting gobbled up by resorts privatized. If you rent a car like we did, prepare for pot holes, no signage and agressive drivers. Would not recommend mopeds if going out of city, roads are rough.

Royal Caribbean has announced that the postponed completion of the renovation will be taking place January to February 2018.https://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/category/category/adventure-seas Hurricanes are just part of the business.

I pity the people you cruised with RealView, you sound so negative and miserable. Why not go on a camping trip in the middle of nowhere and all by yourself. I bet you still wouldn't be happy.

RealView    7 years ago

According to the Captain during the safety drill announcement, yes as we left port, St. Lucia was closed due to dredging to accommodate larger ships for RCCL. During the cruise it was discovered RCCL knew about this days before sailing. Considering the ship was there 2 weeks prior, makes you wonder why it was kept quiet. Obviously the entertainment director was caught offguard as well, initial shore excursions to new port Martineqe were in B&W and a mass scramble to dig up things to do hit the entire ship.ƒ‚‚

Why was the port closed? When were you on this ship?

RealView    7 years ago

If you have a cruise planned based on Moons statements, switch ships and wait for the upgrades. Unfortunately I relied on RCCL booking and didnt go back far enough

Based my booking on the reviews on here that obviously are either staff from RCCL or paid stoolies part of the presidents club crowd wanna be who become clouded in that search that everything is great. The upgrading of a new chef still isn't clear because the food on this ship sucks, period, upgrade or not.

Again, about the renovations, if you just go to their website and search the adventure of the seas (if you know anything about their boats and THIS specific upgrade plan/class of ships) you can obviously tell not everything was done. Furthermore, RCCL released a statement back in 2016 stating (and I quote) "modified revitalization plans for Adventure of the Seas due to storm damage caused by Hurricane Matthew at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport. Plans to add 100 new staterooms as well as the lines signature Japanese restaurant Izumi were cancelled. In addition, the storm forced delays in completion of the aqua park, FlowRider, and water slides as well as Chops Grille and Suites Lounge." The flow rider, Aqua park, water slides, chops, and suites lounge were completed January of 2017. Everywhere I look, knowing the original plans to add 100 staterooms, add Izumi, do a refresher to rooms, and outfit it like the Navigator are blatantly apparent that they weren't completed on every website. It sounds to me like you're just not informed and trying to justify your negativity.

No motives Steve, we sailed on two other RC cruises in the Met, same ship, first 2 months old, second 7 years old. Worlds apart on the second, each port the ship smelled of sewer. I also traveled on the Summit in 2015 and had our trip in April 2017 (shortened due to ship propulsion issues) so we took the refund and went on Adventure to catch the other ports married with our 2015 cruise. The Celebrity Summit is about the same age BUT it was totally updated. The information given on cruise credict, through RC and other sights implied the Adventure was renovated in 2016. There wasn't any direct contradiction to the info, in other words the info was misleading and "suggested" the ship was completely renovated. Simple things like ice in your suite, the ability to present fish that is moist, the knowledge that Filet Mignon is best served rare to medium rare not well done are basics in cooking. I'm not that refined but come on, $4,000+ for a the level of original played out room decor, run of the mill food found at lower income over salted food chains is not acceptible.

Dear Readers, Take the info at face value, only wish I had this info and not hung up on protecting what was with the cruise line or this particular ships past. Each person at any given time experience the cruise differently. I can assure you the rooms won't be upgraded in 2017, and based on the galley tour, pre-made food is the norm under this chef.

Well, it was a funny review, I'll give it that. that hasn't been my experience

RC has never disappointed us and this is our 3rd cruise with them. We have never had problems with the food either. We are excited for this ship, heard lots of great things about the renovations to her. I'm sure it will be just fine.

Thanks setexSteve makes me feel better it going to be a special cruise for me it will be on 60th Bday!

SetexSteve    7 years ago

Your critiques don't hold much status with me and probably with most other people since you haven't registered any other cruises or reviews. I question your motives.

mrsmoon    7 years ago

They never claimed that all the renovations were complete during the 2017 dry dock.

cherylm57    7 years ago

Maybe they will do something after your recommendation. As a business owner I would be stepping into action!

RealView    7 years ago

I would change the date or ship. Trust me, this ship and chef need a make over. I spoke with Royal post cruise and customer relations recomends the newer ships for food and service for suite / Jr. Suite travelers. As I posted, the crew is NOT the issue. The Chef and those who hide behind the front line folks hold them accountible. If you complain about the food the waiter gets the bad mark not the chef. Just letting you know in advance. The ports are the ports, look at Trip Advisor for each and enjoy.

cherylm57    7 years ago

That could not be further from the truth... I have been on others and they are awful. This is why I go with RC and I'm a chef!

cece1951    7 years ago

What I have been told time after time. RCCL has the WORST food. Being a foodie and good cook myself do not know if I could handle it.

We have been on this ship 9 times since 2010 and had a fabulous time everytime, even when the ship broke down. The staterooms are quite dated but I believe she is going back into drydock next year for a month to finish the rennovations that never got done cause of hurricane Matthew. The staff bend their backs to help and please you. We have never had a problem with the food either. Hope she comes back to San Juan after her year north, would sail on her again and again..
