Loved Flåm but if we had caught the railway down as well as up, we would have missed so much breathtaking scenery! Booked the railway up online prior to our holiday for 8.35am. We wanted to cycle down as we had read fantastic reviews of oap's cycling it (so I had no excuse!!!) For some reason we were unable to book the cycles online so we decided to risk it and make a beeline for the cycle hire as soon as we got off the train. Very helpful guy and it cost £35 each to hire the cycles but oh so glad we did it! Apart from the very beginning of the walk that is steep and recommended by the cycle guy that you walk it, it was the easiest and most enjoyable bike ride we've ever done! Best part of the holiday and we would have been slightly disappointed with the Flåmbana if we had got it back down the mountain. (Not very much to see or do at the top... just a coffee shop so maybe allow half an hour for refreshments if you are using the railway back down)

We LOVED Flam (or Flom as its pronounced!). We didn't see much of it as we went on the 'Norway in a Nutshell' excursion. This was excellent mix of private & public railway, lunch and a return trip by coach with a commentary by a lady who really knew her stuff: very interesting & enjoyable. Lots of amazing scenery.

Do the train you can book it yourself at the station loads of spare seats & so much cheaper than Thomson! It's about £43 return each ticket easy to do & very pretty.

Flam railway is a must do. If you are happy to take the risk, tickets may be available on the day and are half the price of P&O excursion. We got on fine.

Where the boat docks there are some shops and cafes, the Flam railway is only 2 minutes from the boat and there are some nice walks in the area which take in some waterfalls.

Great port, very easy too explore on your own. Pop to the train station first thing to buy your train tickets, half the price of ship excursions. Or take the bus to the viewpoint.

We booked the Flåmsbana train to Myrdal, and had advance booked cycles for the 12 mile downhill ride back to Flåm. It was a bit hairy at times, but fantastic views.
