We really enjoyed Catalina. Some said the thing to do is rent a golf cart, but we didnt know our way around so we opted to take the open air shuttle and get on and off for $6 each all day. Botanical gardens are fast but fun to see, Descanso (sp?) Beach is a relaxing must see, shopping. Plenty of nice lunch places, but we were ready to head back to the ship around 2-3 pm, so just ate our wonderful FREE food on board.

I’m not big into shopping which is what most of the little town is about. We didn’t get to go do any of the wine related things because we had minors with us. Snorkeling was cool but we kept having to watch out for the glass bottom submarine which limited where we could snorkel.

I took the ship-sponsored tour of the island interior with Airport-in-the-Sky. You go where golf carts aren't allowed on a long serpentine, bumpy road in an air conditioned van. Beautiful views of the coastline, some ranch animals, roaming buffalo that were set loose a while ago. Avalon looked picturesque. Also get good views of your ship from up high. Guide/driver was personable and informative. Weather got rainy on the way back. A note to anyone traveling around California during December: bring rain gear if there is a recent history (within 2 weeks) of rain. If it's raining you will feel it when everyone forms an endless line to tender back to the ship.

Catalina was a small island with a population of around 3,000. Very cozy. Everyone drives golf carts around. We didn't pick a shore excursion at this destination, so we spent our time doing some shopping around at some of the many stores right off the port. We didn't stop to eat at any restaurants, so I have no advice there. If I took this cruise again, I would definately take the tour where they take you up to the Wrigley estate, which we were told was the first house built on the island.
