We did not have enough time to explore New Orleans but if you go towards the French quarter there is tons to see. We did eat it voodoo BBQ and grill right next to the airport and that was very good.

No, because we drove to it from Mississippi. New Orleans has a lot to offer--aquarium, movies, wonderful restaurants, museum, trolley transportation, jazz clubs.
