Heimaey, Westman Islands, Iceland

Walked the mountain of lava which was created when the volcano eruption buried half the town. It was pouring rain and wind gusts of 40 mph so our shore excursion was cancelled. Given how often there is bad weather here, I'm surprised they didn't have some extra options for shore excursions - like more bus rides so you could sightsee and stay dry! They had one bus excursion (totally prebooked) - everything else involved getting soaking wet or was cancelled.

Boat trip. Beautiful.

Small town. Did the Caves & Islands Rib Safari excursion. Suited up lots of fun speeding around the entire Island. Viewed some great landscapes and lots of birds. Several folks we met went whale watching and saw lots of whales and puffins. had some extra time so we visited the Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary / Sæheimar Aquarium, short walk small place not necessarily worth it would have been better to walk around town. If you go they do not accept cash!

Our excursion to the "bird cliffs" was excellent. The view point was the best we found of all the others. While it was rainy and cool the chance to see the puffins was worth the dampness and chill. The tender too and from the ship was very rough. Not sure it was really safe for older passengers.

We skipped the excursions and walked the island on our own (about 10 miles overall). It’s quite beautiful.
