We ran aground at about 4:30AM and were awakened by the emergency alarms. Luckily the river bottom was soft mud and our hull was not damaged. The ship was lightened by transferring fluids aft and draining some tanks and the main swimming pool. After many hours of roaring the engines full blast we at last freed ourselves without need of a tug

Wish we could have had local entertainment and speakers on board. Could have even been local craftsmen. Something to expand our visit and knowledge of the area. All our speakers were retired white men with no real connection with the Amazon or Brazil.

Reading about the Amazon is certainly different than visiting it. Depending on the time of year, the river can be low and there are almost no bugs. Although the Amazon is a wide river, the ship was usually close to a bank for photos.

Unfortunately the Amazon cruise was underwhelming. We ran aground and missed two ports. Manaus and Belem are large, dirty cities. The excursions were disappointing and we saw few animals and virtually nothing about the Amazon rainforest.
