We went on a tour with Tours by Gus. It included boat tour of the river, which was beautiful. We also visited a school and delivered school supplies and had a chance to visit with the children and teachers. Gus was great and answered all of our questions about the country.

This was my 3rd time to this port and I enjoy it because it isn’t commercialized with the typical shops and bars. I have done a tour of the Rio Dulce and Livingston in the past with Happy Fish. This time I was on a solo cruise and booked a day pass to Amatique Bay Resort through the cruise line. It was a First Class resort with a great beach, waterslides, amazing pool with a swim-up bar and reasonable drink and food prices. Frozen drinks were $ 5 US, burger and fries was $ 10 and bottled water was $ 2.

We took a tour of the town Santo Tomás de Castilla and Puerto Barrios. Very nice tour for our small group of six, but sad to see the living conditions of a lot of the people.

This port is a work in progress. It’s a shipping port and not very pleasant to look at. We chose not to do an excursion, but there are options here and I recommend getting away from the port. There is a large inside building that is very welcoming to visitors. We got our passports stamped and shopped. Jade and stone and silver jewelry is beautiful at good prices. Many unique items here and local culture to learn about. We watched natives perform dances and music it was very nice to see. Very nice people here
