There is no need to ever go to Santo Tomas.

The waterfall trip was disappointing. The scenery on the trip to the waterfall was great, but the waterfall area itself was congested and we stayed 2 full hours. If you really plan on swimming at the waterfall, you might like it. If not, you're going to waste your day. Guatemala is beautiful. Try something else to enjoy it.

The "mall" at the end of the gangway turned out to be a better deal than we thought after spending $120 on a cab to go into town. The taxis should be monitored more closely - they take advantage of travelers and you don't get what you pay for. We hired the cab to take us to Puerto Barrio market and then to the new Santo Tomas mall, but instead we got a 90 minute tour of the slums. The driver never took us to the mall but brought us back to the dock early instead. The vendors in the shopping area by the ship were so desperate for a sale we felt pretty uncomfortable being there.

We were on a 10-hour excursion to Tikal that we loved, had a glimpse at the city only on our quick bus transfer. Less poor area than Belize, still I wouldn't stroll downtown like I would do in Key West.

Didn't find a good restaurant. A general tour is nice.

We didn't venture too far from the ship, just shopped at the port and back on the ship..again book an excursion with the cruise ship to feel safe and secure on this island too.
