Very interesting passage thru locks. You have plenty of time to watch the transit from different locations (Room balcony, front of dining room, decks (front and back)), so you dont have to get up ultra early to secure a spot. Each location gave a different perspective. We passed under the Atlantic bridge at 7 am and were positioned in front of the first lock by 8:45. By 10 we were in Gatun Lake. Took the Gamboa Rainforest tour. Took tender to shore and boarded a bus for an hour tour of the countryside. Arrived at Gamboa Rainforest Resort and toured for 3 hours, including taking a tram thru the tree tops. A snack of small sandwiches and a water were waiting for us at the bus. I suggest you bring along small snacks and water for daytime. Tour and guide were very good and was worth its cost. **On a side note, about 100 passengers took a ship excursion thru the locks in a small boat, and got stuck on the other side because of some issue with the locks. Since it was a ship excursion, the Princess waited for their return, which wasn't until about 8:30pm, before leaving port.

What a marvel. Loved watching and we booked the excursion through the cruise line to go through the locks with a small vessel. "Panama Canal & Locks Transit by Boat" which cost us $339.90. It was crazy to see how many vessels, we were next to a huge shipping container ship (send chills down my spine). I kinda regret not staying on the ship the whole time since we had a balcony cabin. It was a long day with a long bus ride back. I almost forgot, our bus got pulled over by the policia! They apparently wanted some money but our feisty guide starting yelling at him and threatening him that she would notify her friends who were government officials because it was illegal for him to stop tour buses and demand money. THAT was just a LITTLE SCARY!

I loved this. It was the highlight watching the ship entering the locks to Gatun Lake. I did an excursion to the new locks and former Canal Zone. At the observation area saw a container ship entering the canal being pulled by a tugboat in front and pushed by a tugboat in back. Fascinating!
