We did not have as much opportunity to explore the port area because we booked the snorkeling with sharks and rays excursion and that took all day. Also because this is a tender port, you must take a 20 minute boat ride from the ship to the port. One guest on the tender ended up losing his breakfast out the side right in front of me...so bad start. Then, come to find out he is on the same excursion- yikes. On this excursion you take a 20 minute boat ride to Caye Caulker or Key Caulker, a small island off of Belize City. There you stop to change and give your food order to the restaurant there. Then back on the boat to get to the reefs. You snorkel in 2 areas, one around coral reefs and another with sharks and rays. The water was a bit rough and wouldn't you know it...in between snorkel locations, another guy loses his breakfast over the side of the boat. Ugh...by the time we got back to Caye Caulker, i was in no mood to eat. All this of course has to do with my fellow cruisers...nothing to do with the people running the excursion. In fact they were incredibly knowledgeable about the island and about Belize. Best part at Caye Caulker was walking around the area. we happened upon an animal shelter with a sign that said come in and pet our animals. Found this is a no kill shelter that cares for dogs, cats, and other animals...they are not caged, but are free to run around within the gated area of the shelter. We loved spending time with the animals...it was hard not to take one or two with us.

The port itself was very dirty and small. People were pushy about everything. Shoving excursions in your face or trying to get you to buy something. The meet up for everybody’s excursions made it even more crowded. We got our souvenir and went straight back to the tender to get back on the boat. The water is SUPER pretty and clear. Would have loved to have booked an excursion to go off somewhere and relax and snorkel. It is the second largest barrier reef.

The snorkeling at the reef was wonderful! It was a highlight of our trip to see the beautiful coral and all of the many species of incredible fish!

At this stop, I took the snorkeling excursion to the barrier reef, then chilled on a private little island for a few hours.

We did the Lamanai Mayan Ruins & river boat safari. I loved the Ruins and would go back again. I was kind of disappointed about the “river boat safari.” As it was no where near a safari. It was pretty much a huge open river at a fast speed. Overall it was a great opportunity to see historic places.

Went to Jaguar Paw and trekked through the jungle, then the best part was tubing through the underground caves. The worst part was only the drive to and from the port to get to the jungle. On the way there, the tour guide kept talking and we had to make an unplanned stop because one passenger had to use the restroom. Otherwise, the actual tour was fantastic.

We did an independent excursion and it was perfect. This was the most memorable vacation day ever.
