Avoid if all possible. When I first read about this port online I was bummed. There is literally nothing but two shops and you have to drive for a while to get to the beach. My husband and I took a FOREVER bus ride excursion to chichen itza. While the place is beautiful and I loved it, not sure it was worth that long miserable bus ride.

We went to the Sacred Cave Snorkeling expedition. We knew the bus ride was going to be an hour and a half both ways. The tour guides, Priscilla and Christine, were excellent and the people in the village were very welcoming and great. I enjoyed the cave snorkeling, my wife did not but, she is not much of a snorkeling person, especially in smaller spaces. If you have knee, hip or back problems that would keep you from feeling comfortable on small, narrow spaces then the cave snorkeling may not be for you.

I've read alot of bad reviews for this port but obviously they just stayed in the Progresso port area. Granted Progresso is a very poor port town but Merida is just a 45 min bus from Progresso. Bus tickets were $8.00 US for a round trip ticket. The bus is easy to take and the ride itself is interesting. Merida is the 2nd largest city in the Yucatan and is full of history and good food. Next time you get to Progresso check out Merida. Plus there is free wifi in Plaza Grande!!

Port shopping was nice but would not do another excursion in Progresso. Did not feel as safe as in Cozumel.

We just walked around and checked out the city. Not real touristy which is fine, but not real exciting.
