We actually got to Venice a few days early and found that it is a great place to stay awhile and enjoy.

Venice is a fascinating city! It is like stepping back in time! Five years ago we booked the pre-cruise package through Holland America that included three hotel nights, a walking tour of the city, and a day trip to the countryside to visit two authentic 16th century vineyards! Everything was wonderful! I highly recommend visiting the Doges Palace and taking time to enjoy a cocktail in St Mark’s square. Then find a pizzeria along the canal and swing for the upcharge to get a table by the water. We found the people to be very helpful and friendly. We loved it so much that we’re going back in Aug 2018! I can’t wait! We’ve booked the pre-cruise package again through HAL but it’s different this time. It includes 2 hotel nights and a luxury canal cruise ending with cocktails and appetizers at the Duchess’ Palace. Based on our previous experience, I know HAL will do everything first class!

Again, the weather interfered with our plans here. The ship was not able to enter the port at the planned time, as the port authorities closed the port for a while. Once we docked, we lost about 3 hours of sightseeing. Viking adjusted and we were able to do the included tour. We were able to see St. Mark’s Square, but the cathedral had closed. We also walked a maze of streets to get to the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge. The local signage is great, so even though it was a maze, we were easily able to find bridge and get back to shuttle boat area.

Do not take their tours. Just use ship's water taxis to St Mark Square, get a map and do your own thing.

Despite being very busy with tourists it is still a magical place. Well worth walking away from the main attractions to get a better feel of the ambiance where the canals and streets are quieter. It is a bit like a maze but if you get lost the locals will direct you back to the main area. The train is only about 2 Euro’s from the docks to the canals and is only about a 5 minute ride.

Had a great day in Venice even in a wheelchair there is not much you can’t do. We even went for a gondola ride with the wheelchair. Traveling round by water bus was easy we took in all the major sights I ❤️ Venice

What an interesting place, my father was here for a little while during the WW2. He always said it was a bit smelly, it may have been back then but not now. It's a stunning, jaw dropping place to see, yes it's crammed with tourists but what can you do except. Loved it, been a few years since I was there and would love to return it is awesome.

Venice is a wonderful and unique city to visit. Once we figured out how to get around by vaporetto, we loved it. I would advise taking a private water taxi to whatever hotel you book rather than a vaporetto, unless you take the cruise package in which case the transfers will be included.
