The tour in Helsinki was the worst of our cruise. We had a walking tour described as a moderate 2 mile walk that turned out to be almost 5 miles long. We walked around town and only visited inside the Rock Church. The guide was terrible and we didn't learn very much about Helsinki. Overall, this excursion was a total was of time. We would gladly skip a visit to Helsinki in return for an extra day in St Petersburg

Not a lot of attractions other than an obscure Olympic stadium currently under repairs, the Rock Church (you guessed it, it’s a church under a rock that charged an admission fee, which we decided had not enough bang for the buck), a totally inconspicuous parliament building, a couple of imposing churches, an ordinary-looking palace, and an average street bazaar by the pier, whose prices seem to be on par with those in exclusive malls in North America. Our one-day transit pass allowed us to also take a ride in a ferry to Suomenlina Island, about which we could say not much more than “we’ve been there, done that”.

Our SPB Tours guide Irena was originally from Ukraine. We climbed us a very large hill (on cobblestones) in Porvoo to see a medieval church that was closed. We all decided not to climb this hill again and ended up at a candy store with lots of free samples. Then we went to Helsinki to see the Rock Church (Temppeliaukio), blasted out of rock (DUH!). Our bus dropped us off and we started walking around town. We had a nice buffet lunch then off to Market Square where people were buying reindeer hides (EWWWW!) and other local products. Back to the Senate Square and to the ship.

We did a RC excursion which included highlights of Helsinki and historical tour. We loved our tour guide Harri Laine. He was very knowledgable about all sorts of things and very friendly. It was a very busy jammed pack 5 hour tour of the city.
