It was a rainy day but the easy elevator trip up to Santa Barbara was worth it. Beautiful.

Alicante is a beautiful city with an expansive and impressive, palm-tree-lined boardwalk that may be the finest in all of Europe. It is 700 meters long and made up of 6.5 million fine pieces of marble that have been hand placed. The city also has an enormous and well-preserved fort or castle on the city's highest point that enabled the city to successfully avoid capture by Napolean's army, just like Cadiz.

Had a wonderful excursion with Roberto (five stars go to him!). He was very attentive to everyone. City of light it is! It was a large metro with all that encompasses. Noticed several vacant lots and shady looking areas. I loved the palm tree lined streets, though. We then drove to Elche to an absolutely beautiful town that we both said we will return to visit! It is full of history, a lot of Valencia, Muslim, Christian influence. The Palm Groves is a not to miss place. A lot of the area are municipal areas free to all. First was a visit to the garden area called Pigeon Tower. An actual home for pigeons! We then drove to the Santa Maria Basilica and walked around the plaza. Had bathroom break and snacks, ie. espresso. It was Sunday and the church bells sounded! WOW. We left and went to Garden Huerta del Cura. It is in the urban area of Elche full of date palms, bamboo, cacti. The ‘Imperial Palm’ is majestic. The pools are so serene I could have set on a bench and enjoy all day. Having extra time, Roberto took us to a little ‘pub’ for wine and plates of the most delicious cheese I’ve ever had. Can’t believe I didn’t get its name! Bull fighting is still a ‘sport’ and pub had a huge stuffed black bull and pictures of matadors and picadors on walls. Then loaded bus back to Alicante. What an awesome final excursion before we sail to disembark in Barcelona.

Wish we had skipped the excursion and spent time in Alicante. Our original excursion which spent the entire time in Alicante was cancelled. Had hoped to visit a few local tapas bars

We didn’t do an excursion in Alicante. In the morning we took the elevator up to The Castle of Santa Barbara. The views were magnificent. Walked around town in the afternoon to see the sights.

Didn’t go ashore as I didn’t see anything that looked interesting and it was a rainy day. Town was not close to the cruise port.

We had an easy walk from the port to a small beach. We only had a few hours at this port as we had to be back on the ship by 2:30pm so we did not have much time for exploring the city.
