Unfortunately while we were here it was extremely foggy and we couldn't see much on our Hop on Hop off tour. About an hour before we left it was clear and the sun came out.

The cruise terminal is in the city, but we had a Tour By Local guide who picked us up at the Terminal and took us on a private full day tour of the "Troll Road." Our guide, Igvars, got us into an old church {most people just got to see the outside of the church}, arranged a great snack in a small town, and overall gave us a great feel for the area.

Our excursion began with a scenic ferry ride. Then, we reached Stranda and took the gondola ride to the top of the mountain and had amazing views. Next, our excursion took us to a town called: Stordal where we tasted the local cuisine and it had beautiful scenery. Lastly, we drove to the top of a mountain in Alesund and had an amazing view of the area. This was a day to remember forever. If you don’t have an excursion, there are shops and restaurants at the port but I’d recommend booking an excursion so you can take in the beauty.

We had once come here by train and on this day recognised none of it. It was really a delight to walk round. The central sea inlet right through the town, the harbour wall on the far side. We climbed to the smaller lookout to the left (the side of the church and school that looks like a monastery) and watched the ants toiling up the far steps. Here we, off the Sapphire Princess compared notes with a couple off the Saga Sapphire. We all seemed happy with our choices.

Be sure to do the Outer Islands Tour, connected by under water tunnels. Beautiful countryside views, tour a beautiful lighthouse and a 900 year old church in Geiske. We were so glad we booked this excursion!

Alësund is a small town. We walked around the town then traveled around by road tran. The highlight was the high mountain viewpoint (480+ steps if you walked up).
