There were long lines at immigration, the only port that requires this. Then the computers crashed so we stood in line for over an hour. The bus for City Highlights and Pushkin was cramped and uncomfortable. There were several large groups with odd numbers of guests, so my husband and I did not get to sit together. The Winter Palace is impressive, and we were also able to take photos at a few other sights. This tour was an adequate value for the money, nothing special.

We had 2 tours in this port where we stayed overnight. The first day we went to Spilled Blood Church and the second day to The Hermitage. Both were excellent and they were short enough so we would not get tired.

You have to be in a tour at all times and usually they take care of the visa you need. It's important to take a private tour, like SPB tours, because your group is small and you have a really good expert guiding you.

We had to show our passports to enter AND to get back to the ship. The government employees at the passpot check points were surly and not at all welcoming. The Hermitage was like a sauna and the bus ride an ordeal.
