Of course we took a guided tour to the Hermitage and to Peterhof; our visit to the Hermitage was a disappointment as they were so crowded and the crowds were not managed; our guide was a little tense, we had a hard time hearing; our tour of the city seemed to criss-cross the same area several times and we would have loved to see the subway stations with their hanging chandeliers; our lunch was a great effort on their part, but very mediocre -- it would have been better to have a local "snack" and move on to more "sites to see"; our trip to Peterhof was much better because the guide was much more relaxed, told us something of the economy, culture, her trip to the US and her impressions; Peterhof crowds were much better managed (although very joyless), but we came away with a better feel for the culture.

Great. Did the two day excursion from the ship. However on the first day the guide left about one third of the behind while the rest were taken to the river boats. She thought she had everybody but failed to do a count. I went to another guide and asked her to try to contact our guide. I then went back near our bus and she returned about 10 minutes later from river boats.

Catherine's palace was beautiful and it makes you appreciate the divide between the rich and poor which i think is still going on. everything we past on the way was utilitarian run down nothing quaint
