Ports of call

St. Petersburg, Russian Federation

Of course we took a guided tour to the Hermitage and to Peterhof; our visit to the Hermitage was a disappointment as they were so crowded and the crowds were not managed; our guide was a little tense, we had a hard time hearing; our tour of the city seemed to criss-cross the same area several times and we would have loved to see the subway stations with their hanging chandeliers; our lunch was a great effort on their part, but very mediocre -- it would have been better to have a local "snack" and move on to more "sites to see"; our trip to Peterhof was much better because the guide was much more relaxed, told us something of the economy, culture, her trip to the US and her impressions; Peterhof crowds were much better managed (although very joyless), but we came away with a better feel for the culture.
Don't Miss: Peterhof and St. Petersburg itself

Stockholm, Sweden

The changing of the guard was a disappointment; we waited for some time, thought there were horses involved........but all in all, exciting.
Don't Miss: The old town

Warnemunde (Berlin), Germany

We took the train into Rostock; loved the St. Martin church, chatting with the locals, lots of places to wander;
Don't Miss: The resort itself; such lovely shops, looking at the beach!

Helsinki, Finland

Be sure to eat some "fish bait" at the harbor; wonderful snack if you can get to it before the seagulls!
Don't Miss: The rock church and the esplanade

Visby, Sweden

We didn't eat there; took a "cheesey train" around the town and wall; absolutely stunning place!
Don't Miss: The Old town, the botanical garden, the flowers growing everywhere!!!!!

We did this on our own, so don't know if we got to see the "must see" points, but we thoroughly enjoyed it anyway; we liked being able to walk to the town and then back to the ship; we didn't eat there.
