I did the beach break in Izmir. It turned out to be a fancy resort and was one of the most amazing places in terms of beauty, experience, and NO CROWDS! The only drawback was the long drive (1+45 each way) with a short 3 hours at the resort/beach. Turkey is my favorite country but I've been here before. I would recommend one of the site tours for someone that wants to experience one of the greatest places on earth. Again, great excursion to the beach but there was nothing local to experience at all on this trip.

Beautiful country side and great restaurants; the pita bread is fantastic. Although it costs more, we recommend taking a private tour of the ancient sites rather than a large group tour. There were four of us and we had our own van with driver and English speaking guide. We learned a lot more than we would have from a large group tour.

If you want to get to Ephesus, which was very interesting, we took a guided excursion for this one. It's about an hour away from Izmir, so it'd be tough to get to on your own. We were taken to a Turkish rug making school. But be warned to salesman were VERY pushy.

this was the place that we had the most time to spend in (about 8 hours). It was the least intersting place by far. Thank goodness i took an excusion for this one. I took the Ephacis one and it was amazing. But Izmir was boring. lots of shops but they didnt sell anything nice i also coulnt find anything in silk (isnt turkey famouse for their silk? what the...?) . Hardly anyone spoke english and most shops didnt take euros, you had to change your money to tukish liras.

Went to Ancient Ephesus that day. Tour guide was not so good. Very crowed that day and could not hear the guide explaining things. No time for shopping!

Take the horse and buggy ride, for 4 people 15. No bargaining for carpets as we had done in the past, so kind of disappointing (no more magic carpets....) . Shopping in general prices good and unusal (fun & realtively inexpensive), not made in China, goods.

The best port on our trip. Very well organized, best tour guides of the trip and great venues. We did the "Ephesus and House of virgin Mary" tour and it was awesome. It just felt unreal to walk the same places people did 2000 years back!
