My biggest regret was not having watched Game of Thrones before we visited. Dubrovnik was insanely crowded when we there in September. It was frustrating as it was an effort to stop and look at the churches, buildings, craft stalls and shops without someone pushing to get past. We eventually gave up, sat in a cafe and people watched while we drank coffees and beer until early afternoon when the crowds finally thinned out. Some lovely local crafts, lots of GoT souvenirs and good food and coffee. We found a Salvador Dali print exhibition tucked just to the right of the main gate which was a nice surprise. The pay toilets near the gate were a problem because the female attendant would only take local currency. Even the offer of 10 Euros and a face of desperation wouldn’t budge her. Finally a beautiful young local man came to my rescue, apologised and gave the woman the correct currency - and refused to take any Euros in return. His mother would have been proud.

Took the shuttle to town & entered the castle area/Old Town which was surrounded by a wall. A very unique experience. We booked a tour of the area by van with two other couples. The guide, Zorin, was very friendly & made the tour very intresting. He would stop at different locations & take our pictures with our cellphones. We went through an area where the Game of Thrones is filmed which also looked down upon the city. We were quite high up. This tour & tour guide were a real find. However, we ate at a restaurant which advertised that it took credit cards, but when we went to pay they said the machine was broken. For a very basic lunch they would take $81.00 U.S. or $74.00 in Kona. We paid in Kona after I found a money exchange which are everywhere. By the way, they do not except Euros & there is a charge for public restrooms (about $2.00 per person).

The port is within walking distance of the local bus station and an ATM Machine. It's the only stop where you need local currency. We took the local to the Old City. It was crowded with tour groups, and hot. Be sure to take water. Had to pay extra to get up to the cat walk and it was an hour's wait with difficult stone steps. Not good for someone with ambulatory issues.

Dubrovnik was beautiful. We did a Cruising Excursions excursion that took us to a beautiful overlook of the city and ocean, and then back to the old town for a tour and sightseeing. It's a beautiful old town with lots of limestone and marble, which seemed to be a theme throughout the ports on this itinerary :)
