Highlight of the cruise. We totally did our own thing. Hop on hop of bus 10 dollars, 1949 Chevy for a taxi ride, then evening in Cafe Paris with free live Cuban band playing.

Don't sleep in or you will miss the chamce to get last minute souvenirs. Positi e is there is shopping right near the port. Cigars and rum are a must to purchase as they are hits for friends and family in the US.

Well worth the trip. We used Cubaoutings for our excursion and had an amazing time in Havana. It was educational - our tour guide was amazing! We walked, learned about the history of Old Havana then cruised around in one of the infamous old cars.

Just got home, amazing trip booked a driving tour with Fer tours, 16 in our group in a nice, air conditioned van, 28 cuban dollars per person from 9:30-2:30 included driver and English tour guide. Walked on our own the rest of the day Never felt unsafe even going thru some of the saddest looking neighborhoods, the people were friendly and no beggars that I had read about. If you love animals it was sad , I wish I had food to give them . Would go again.

First, take advantage of any on-board ship lectures about Havana and how to prepare. We are so glad to know about the different types of money, no credit cards, and how to use the bathroom which costs. Our guide for a "Taste of Havana", Joan (pronounced Joe-wan) was excellent. He was knowledgeable about the history and took us on foot to the historic sites where he gave us plenty of time to look around. We went to the hotel where Hemingway stayed and to the bar where he invented the Mojito (and tasted one), to the Floridita bar where he invented another drink (tasted it -- was out of this world), and other notable sites. Included lunch at a wonderful restaurant with real bathrooms (important find in Cuba!) and a classic car ride after lunch. We spent from 9 am to 4 pm walking, eating and drinking and riding and the group was still going to go for beer when my husband and I bailed because we wanted to get back to the ship. Excellent, excellent tour!

The experience is too much to review, so I'll hit the highlights: an OldCar Tours 5 hour tour of the Havana area. Tony, our English speaking guide was amazing and made the experience so much better. Great lunch at a paladar. Saw the Finca Vigia, Cojimar and later, on foot without a guide, much of Old Havana. It's a little intimidating, but do it anyway -- you won't regret it. Be sure to have a frozen daiquiri at the Floridita and a mojito at Dos Hermanos near the Havana Club shop by the terminal. Wear comfortable shoes and when you get off the ship and cross the street, be prepared for the roving artists, who will immediately identify you as a cruiser because you'll be awed and wandering in circles trying to take it all in. They'll sketch you and then try to sell it to you. I figured it would qualify as the piece of original Cuban art that I wanted to take home with the rum and cigars and memories, so I was fine with it. But just be prepared. And the women in the dresses smoking cigars? They're going to want a tip for getting your picture taken with them. It's just the way things are.
