The resorts our fantastic but more than 2 hours outside the resorts is all you need to see this country and you could even do without that.

Again, we are not shoppers but we did go into La Romana to look - nice enough but Bayahibe beach is the real gem of the island. Smooth sand slopes without any dropoffs into warm, calm water where even old folk like us can actually swim. We got hungry and tried a local souvinir shack on the beach for some fish. Looked strange - they fry the entire fish with skin, head and tail and no breading - but it tasted absolutely wonderful - totally fresh and sweet and we picked every bit off the bones!

Didn't go to the candela show, but the village it was in was pretty dull. Not much else to do there considering the few hours we had and arriving at night. If you didn't go to the show, there was really nothing to do.

We have gone into the "town" on a previous cruise. This time we went on a snorkeling excursion with Celebrity . The catamaran was very nice. The snorkeling was awful....lots of trash on the bottom....very few fish. We will not get off the ship again if we go on a cruise to this port.

The shopping lady said there was no shopping so I stayed on board but got board so went ashore took a taxi ride to find loads of quaint shops. I felt cheated just because the shops are not to her liking or upscale enough for her I would have enjoyed looking at the quaint town.

Since we had been to the Dominican Republic before, we knew to sign up for an excursion and not just try and walk about town.
