When we took this same cruise 5 years ago, we arrived right next to Sitka and tendered in. I was looking forward to waking up the morning of our arrival to see this charming town. Unfortunately, the ship now docks at a nondescript terminal away from town, and passengers must take a shuttle (although free) into town. Although I understand why it's better for the town to move cruise ships away from the busy fishing boat area and eliminate the hassle of tendering, I missed being closer to town. We didn't do an excursion.

Don't always get to go to Sitka, but our TA group had free passes to the Raptor Center and a private party for a release of two bald eagles back into the wild. That was an amazing experience! The center itself is really nicely put together, with many types of birds on display inside and outdoors. It's a wonderful there from downtown as well, passing through one of my favorite totem pole parks in SE Alaska. Didn't have much time to explore the downtown, as it's a short day there (7am-2pm). They dock in Sitka now (used to tender), it's about a 12-15 bus ride from where they dock to town. The bus is free. We got back in line at 12:44pm to take the bus to the ship; the line was several hundred deep at that point. But as they has several large busses loading at a time, the wait was only 12 minutes to get on board.

Great port...great activities. Decent time at this port overall. Minimal shopping time at the end of our excursion. We did the Bears, Otters Oh My tour by boat. That is 3 hours long on the boat. Then onto the Bears by bus. We did see a lot of whales on this too! Great tour! Nice Tour guides.

We enjoyed walking around the town. We came across a salmon hatchery just to the right, behind where the bus dropped us off. It was $5 to walk through and had a small tour. After that we walked through a totem pole park. We wandered around for a while and found the shops. I have to say there is not much when it comes to made in Alaska, or even in America. Sad to say.

Very walkable city--walked to the Totem Park and walked on the paths for several miles. Bears had recently been seen but luckily didn't see any on the path. Found a coffee shop that had internet.

We docked at the Old Sitka Dock and boarded our tour bus there. Our guide was a native of Sitka and was well-informed and shared lots of interesting information. We visited the Fortress of the Bear, saw lots of bald eagles, went to a cool rain forest (Sitka National Historical Park). Great trip!

Loved this tiny town. Only has 1 stop light, actually all three towns only had 1 stoplight. Enjoyed doing the walking tour. You can pick up a walking tour map at the visitor center.
