Review summary

Would have been the perfect cruise if only there was more entertainment on board. Was a little too sedate. However, the room was beautiful and the scenery spectacular. The food on Holland America is always great.

It took us 5 minutes total to embark.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Ate mostly at the Lido and enjoyed it. Food generally excellent

Lido Restaurant

5 out of 5

Service and staff were wonderful. Love that they got us coffee and drinks. Food was good.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Not too much to do on the ship. For most of the trip it was too cold to take advantage of outdoor areas. Spent time in the spa/thermal suite--sauna/steam room weren't hot enough.

Thermal Suites

4 out of 5

Typical Holland America thermal suite--super busy since an Alaskan itinerary. Couldn't get a bed a few times. Sauna and steam room were not very warm.

Hydro Pool

4 out of 5

Unfortunately was very crowded.

Casino

4 out of 5

Decent casino--table games included Blackjack, Let it ride, 3 Card Poker, and a Texas Hold'Em Table

Entertainment

3 out of 5
No real stage shows this cruise. There was an excellent illusionist one night.

Children's Programs

no Children on the ship

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service excellent as usual on Holland America

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Love having a promenade that you can walk completely around the ship.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
This was a signature suite. Very roomy--loved all the USB outlets. Balcony smaller than other signature suites due to being on the floor just above lifeboats--but there was a large overhang which kept us dry in the rain. Loved having binoculars and a blanket in the room. Love being spoiled by Holland America.

Ship tip

Bring reading material, cards and things to keep you busy when not in port.

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

Walked around downtown. Went on the ferris wheel. Very walkable safe city.

CRUISE STEPHENS PASSAGE

No excursions offered. Really don't remember this at all. I think we were there. Nothing special--ocean, saw a few whale spouting.

Juneau, Alaska

Went on the Mendenhall Glacier explorer. Basically this excursion takes you to the glacier where you have about 2 hours to explore. We walked to nugget falls which was beautiful. You can do the same thing by taking the city bus--the cruise sponsored excursion is expensive but convenient. The ship docks right downtown--which is wonderful.

Cruise Glacier Bay

No excursions were offered. Very beautiful.

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

4 out of 5
Not so much to do there yet--most of the excursions were already sold out. It's $169.00 for the 90 second zipline down the mountain. Looks like they are building up the area and there should be more to do in the future. We did walk along the gondola path. Beautiful area.

Sitka, Alaska

Very walkable city--walked to the Totem Park and walked on the paths for several miles. Bears had recently been seen but luckily didn't see any on the path. Found a coffee shop that had internet.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Went on an boat excursion to the Misty Fiords National Monument. Very beautiful. Saw a few seals. Highly recommend. Ketchican is also easily walkable and the ship docks right downtown.
