Sitka has a small town vibe and lots of Russian influence that can be seen in the building design. Don't miss the Orthodox church in the center of town. Enjoyed shopping at some of the stores that were Christmas themed...that's right, year round Christmas...was pretty awesome!

A really friendly community. We did Thrift Stores here and visited St. Michael's Cathedral. There is now a "donation" of $5. It's worth it as the icons are so unusual. It is a serving church and the shared information is very educational. Sitka is easy to get round in.

We took the tender into Sitka; it would be nicer if they had a pier for the cruise ships. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was very nice. We shopped and had lunch in town, and got more souvenirs.

It's a rainy city. Don't use an umbrella. For practicality, it's best to just wear a coat with a hood or raincoat with a hood.

Sitka is neat but small. We didn't book an excursion and walked on our own in the town and saw the totem poles. Caught a cab to Fortress of the Bear to see the bears in protection and rehabilitating. A good stop though to stretch your sea legs. We saw several bald eagles in the National Forest.

Great vibe in this working/not so touristy town. Walked several beautiful trails in Sitka National Historical Park, saw lots of salmon (including lots of dead salmon). Walked to Raptor Center, $15 entry, to see lots of rehabilitating eagles and other raptors. Rode public bus $2 each trip to the Fortress of the Bear, $15, to see rescued brown and black bears. Watched brown bears feasting on a donated roadkill deer.

I participated in the Best of Sitka tour. It was extremely interesting to visit the Raptor Center and the Bear Sanctuary, but again there was not enough time to enjoy these places throughly.
