Norwegian Sun

Norwegian Sun

s america bound

Our second Norwegian(1st was 10 day Baltic several years ago). Have 16 cruises under our belts.  This was 11 days out of Miami to Cartegna Colombia, 5 sea days and 5 ports.  3 Dutch ports which are always very clean + St Thomas.  Ship was full but never seamed crowded possibly due to the way things are chopped up.  It is not easy to get to different parts of ship as they do not flow into each other but after a few days it became natural.  Only pool deck was crowded on sea days but not overly crowded.  Entertainment was average for cruise ship of this size but we are really not into shipboard shows.  El Goucho was the best-a little showman/entertainer & comedian.  Ship had 2 lounge/piano players, ship orchestra, steel drum trio(which were very good and played everything), duo which played mostly lounge type and a Ukranian band which was the dance band.  Ship did lack a place to dance other than the observation lounge which played 8:30 tol 11:30 each night.  Always had 3-4 venues going even during the two nightly shows which I liked since we usually skip the shows.

Food was very good in main dining and excellant in specialty steak restaurant although did miss lack of shrimp in main dining room and found desserts lacking,  Coke was not available only Pepsi. Sports bar served food all night for late snackers(5:30 pm to 5:30 am).  Never had to wait for any meal & few times we used buffet it was very quick with good quality but not a large selection.

Service throughout the ship was excellant.

Overall, we would recommend this ship & itenirary.

Nieuw Amsterdam

Thanksgiving Cruise

Service great but there was a slight language barrier for non typical situations.  My wife is gluten free and they would give us a menu of the next days meals and she would select so they would cook anything gluten free for her.  Food was very good and had no problem with anytime dining.  Specialty Pinnacle restaurant was exceptional.

Room was balcony on upper promenade.  Very large with balcony @ 25% larger than normal.  Bath also had a tub which was great compared to the usual transporter style shower.

Would have given 5 stars but entertainment was really lacking across the board.

Passengers were not  older  as we expected but ran the entire age spectrum and the ship was still rocking at midnight.  We love to dance and were able to all nights except formal night when only had 1 hour of dancing entertainment.  BB King Blues band was great and played 5 nights in their own theatre with dancing.

Grandeur of the Seas

Grandeur of the Seas

Sail date: July 26, 2013

7 day bermuda

First time on Grandeur . Not the mega liners but we enjoy the smaller vessels. This crew was the most friendly, excited and willing to please of any of the 16 cruises we have taken(I have never had a bad cruise or crew). They seemed to enjoy their jobs if that is possible. Two & 1/2 days at same port makes it a little more hectic. Bermuda is beautiful but expensive & still owned by Britain. The US Dollar is commonly used as well as the Bermuda dollar of the same value. No need to buy local currency. Food was acceptable but not to par of some other cruises except for the two specialty we did which was exceptional(Chops& Izumi). Dinner ok but meats were dry and overcooked. Buffet the same, and selection not great. All was not bad but not as good as we have had. Entertainment below other trips although second comedian very good. We dance a lot and found the dance venue in the back of the ship was only used twice while the centrum area with a small marble floor was used dailey. Both nights we had the band to ourselves while the lesser of the two bands played in the centrum. I think they need to reconcider the use of this room as it is mostly used for Bingo and art auctions. and kareoke. Overall a very nice cruise. Not 5 star but close.

Cruise tips

Panama Canal (Cruise Into Canal)

You DO NOT GET OFF in Panama unless you take a 4.5-6.5 tour, ship just sits on lake for several hours and then returns thru the locks(which is interesting)

George Town, Grand Cayman

tender in-there were 4 other ships there that day--shopping or take a tour. We have been there many times so we just walked along beachfront stores

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

my wife always loves the shopping-went to jewelers we had beeenn to before and they repaired a ring including missing emerald for free( we did not even buy it there but had bought $1300 worth of stuff last year there)

San Juan, Puerto Rico

old San Juan nice walk about-take the ferry($4) to Bacardi rum factory-well worth it and free rum

Nieuw Amsterdam

Nieuw Amsterdam

Don't be late for sit down lunch or breakfast-showed up at 9 for breakfast and they would not seat us as they said open till 9-also had same at coffee bar but they were closing 15 minutes early BB KIng Blues room fills fast

Norwegian Sun

Norwegian Sun

Only Pepsi served, bring cokes if not into Pepsi, smoking allowed in casino which smelled like smoke. Sports bar hidden secret & spa ran daily specials so no need to book early to get special pricing.

Grandeur of the Seas

Grandeur of the Seas

Always got in right away on anytime dining-never waited more than 2 minutes
