While I feel sorry for the affected employees, I understand the position the cruise line is in. Like the others they had to borrow heavily to keep the lights on. Unfortunately there are only two ways to deal with debt to stay in business, raise revenue or cut costs. Since they probably can't find much more in the short term to raise revenue without running the risk of diminishing returns, they have to look at where they can cut. They had already announced they were cutting shoreside staff, and now they have to make the cuts on the ships.

Frankly, I think this is a good area for them to do it (and I'm not trying to be callous). Although this is anecdotal evidence, we, like OGW had no interest in seeing the stage shows that were offered by Carnival on our last cruise. I've also noticed on past cruises that stage shows were much more sparsely attended (again, anecdotal). IMHO this is due to shifting demographics. I believe the younger crowd just isn't into it. While I don't know that for sure, I DO know that corporate decisions like this are normally made after careful study and analysis. They would not be doing it if people were lining up and banging on the theatre doors prior to the shows.

According to Macroaxis (a stock & investing website) of the 3 major lines current financial positions NCL has the highest risk of bankruptcy (46% vs 42% for CCL & 21% for RCL). I only bring that up to underline the gravity of their circumstance.

Again, IMHO If it is found that the entertainment cutbacks are not detrimental to the bottom line, then the other lines (especially CCL) will probably follow suit. As to what the lines can do with all that empty onboard theatre space, my suggestion would be to turn them into video-gaming halls. That'll get the Millennials and Zoomers banging on the doors.

I remember a thread in here not so long ago about someone who was complaining KINKY BOOTS was cancelled..wanted some kind of compensation (didn't look it up, doing this from memory)....we're lucky they don't put on cartoon shows in the main theatre and call it adult entertainment...

Not surprising. More cost cutting. Cannot get away trying to squeeze any more out of the passengers so need to cut elsewhere. I guess they have been checking the pulse of passengers regarding shows and realized they have been living with cancelled shows due to covid and the passengers have not complained too loudly so they are going to make some permanent cancelations. When we were on Joy in Sept had no desire to see Kinky Boots and from what I hear not too many people did. Footloose was cancelled as well due to a death of a stars relative (also some sickness).
