I have heard about finding the ships coin. What is that about. Is there a coin to find with an award or is this made up? I've rarely heard of anyone talk about it.

This link gives a little information about the coin tradition. The best part of the article are the pictures which show the coin being welded into it's box--gives you an idea what to look for on the ship.
It's a tradition that symbolizes good luck and good fortune.
We have seen the ship's coin on the Sunshine, but I've never remembered to look for it on our other cruises.
I've never gone out of my way to look for one, and my search results reflect it. I have not found any!
Found it on the Vista last week. Pictured here: https://cruiseline.com/forum/post/have-you-ever-looked-for-and-found?page=2&per_page=10#answers
Never looked for or found a ship coin but would like to do so. I just don't think about it on a cruise.
Most ship coins are on the aft on deck 10 or 11, It is my hobby to find the ships coin on the different ships we cruise on. Some on the older ships are fogged up with condensation

The bigger ships often have them high than deck 11, but if you like the water works, you might be able to find them more easily,
Can you get commemorative coins from the gift shop as a souvinir?
I watched a show about a cruiseship going through different stages of building. It showed the coin being placed on a large base. It seemed this base was part of the hull or something, but maybe I was wrong.

I can only address this question in regards to Carnival Cruise Lines, but the "coin" is on one of the bulkheads in a public area of the ship, usually somewhere on one of the weather decks. There are a few ships where the "coin" is a bill instead.
I wish I would've know about this and had my kids have hours of fun trying to find it!
