Opening a port is one thing. That is a business decision. The cruise ships can still charge port fees. It’s not their fault if you can’t do anything once you dock.
Not to burst anyone's bubble, but friends I've talked to on St. Thomas and St. Croix report quite a different picture. And while they welcome the tourist trade, especially St Thomas is not anywhere close to being ready in the projected time frames... St. Croix has been scheduled for many redirected cruises but I think they are being extremely cautious about gearing up for tourists that may dwindle away when St. Thomas is back on schedule.
Many of the problems in the USVI will not be visible to the average tourist but behind the scenes the shops and excursions are having difficulty getting workers, supplies and just day to day normal operation...Curfews are still in place and the crime and problems with after hurricane looting and damage remain.
Thanks, Debbie! We are not scheduled to be there until late January, when I am hoping things will be more "normal" for them and my dollars will still be welcome.
