PASSPORT INFO PT 2....FROM THE HORSES...ERR...MOUTH.....

Does anyone have an idea how long it would take to REPLACE a passport? A cruise friend has lost her passport during a move and now we aren't sure if we should book a cruise this year at all.

Good question...Found several sites that say 9 months but they didn't look "official". Then I got lost in the actual US GOVT site. I seem to remember we did ours right at a year prior to expiration, and it took about 3 months but that was back in the day. I'm reasonably sure a year is about right in answer to your question...but if someone can find an official answer, i'd like to read it myself. REMEMBER...some countries, some cruiselines want your passport to be valid for AT LEAST six months before "use"....

How early can you apply for renewal?

Yes, I heard this was happening.

Since our next cruise isn't until 2/24, I was going to wait until July or August to deal with renewing our passports. However, I decided to move it up to later this month, after we get back from a trip to AZ. I thought it might be prudent, just in case you invite us to join you for a cruise this fall (as your guests, with all expenses paid of course).

As for the backlog, perhaps the State Dept. could poach a few of those 87,000 new IRS agents I read about to speed up the applications.
