Do you have a favorite memorory of a ship no longer in service ?

Do you have a favorite ship, (with favorite memories) that is no longer in service ?? For me, the Golden Odyssey of Royal Cruise Line (about 1981 or 1982). Deputy Director of the Cruise line sat at our table. We were wined and dined the whole cruise and treated as royalty. Only my second cruise, but this cruise made me a life-long cruise fan. The following cruise, the Deputy Director could not join us, but he informed the ship of our presence. Again, special treatment. To this day, my two Royal Cruise line cruises (Golden Odyssey and Royal Odyssey) ALWAYS bring happy memories. Opa !!!

PRIVATEER43...got the notification of your post re limbo contests, but unfortunately it got eaten by the glitch monster...happens to all of us...all kinds of explanations, ABLEMAN is convinced its some kind of vast conspiracy...as good an explanation as any...anywho, yeh I could limbo with the best of em..several thousand years ago.....the trick is if your knees are (were) limber enough to bend your legs so that your ankles and knees are on the floor more or less simultaneously, and oiled enough with your fav fluid, you could kind of play that ol air guitar with your hips and kind of hump your way under the bar, almost like walking on your shoulders.......I think Ill stop there...suffice it to say I'd need more joint replacements than I already have..I wouldn't need an air evac...just toss me over the side...more merciful.

I noticed the "Limbo contest" listed and that made me realize I've never seen one live. I'm sure I've seen many in movies and TV, but never one live. I wonder why they disappeared from cruises? Perhaps too many incidents for the ships' medical staffs??

For me, it was seeing the S.S Meridian for the first time at five years old. It was my first cruise!

Thanks for sharing these. You started cruising before we did. No trap shooting by then (I coulda been a contender) but the other highlights were still a thing,

Second memory. Carnival Tropicale, August 1986

I posted these on Shipmate last year.

Some highlights, page 1: trap shooting, and at 1130, Mexican Mama cocktails for $1.75 (can you say inflation -lol)

Page 2, the midnight buffet (with a picture time slot), AND, the Male Nightgown Contest.

I think I have some pictures in the basement of the contest. It was fun. Many officers from the LAPD and the Beverly Hills PD. They sure pocked fun at each other. Fun cruise as I was an outsider, but invited due to my Cousin.

And THIS is why more and more lawyers are onboard...and meeting ships, or the first person you call once home.......why waste time?....thaaaaats it, no mo bars....blame it all on mini golf and rides...((kaff kaff)....learning to use your ummm...."putter" properly is a rite of passage...

A Par 2 on every hole ??? A hole-in-one could take on a hole new meaning Yummy

Now that would be interesting. Maybe not family friendly... more like how to make a family.Big SmileWink

I think they should have combined the two.

So they changed it to the mini golf area. Ha-ha-ha
