Do you have a favorite memorory of a ship no longer in service ?

Do you have a favorite ship, (with favorite memories) that is no longer in service ?? For me, the Golden Odyssey of Royal Cruise Line (about 1981 or 1982). Deputy Director of the Cruise line sat at our table. We were wined and dined the whole cruise and treated as royalty. Only my second cruise, but this cruise made me a life-long cruise fan. The following cruise, the Deputy Director could not join us, but he informed the ship of our presence. Again, special treatment. To this day, my two Royal Cruise line cruises (Golden Odyssey and Royal Odyssey) ALWAYS bring happy memories. Opa !!!

Another memory.

Princess Cruises will be porting with excursions in Yorktown, Virginia this year.

Three replicas of the original 1607 ships: Susan Constant (71 passengers), Godspeed (52 passengers), and Discovery (21 passengers) are docked here. From my mid-1970's memory, the one thing that stood out to me were the bunks. I recall about 4-5 feet long, and 'maybe' 2-feet wide. So small !! AND - topside - not much elbow room.

Once again, these 'cruise' ships are no longer in service. Originally, they left London in December, 1606 and arrived at Yorktown in May, 1607 (a quick 4-month trans-Atlantic voyage).

Please do not ask about the shower accommodations, the bathroom(s), how many formal nights, or when was lobster night. I hear tell there was more rum aboard, than potable water. That should make at least ONE of you happy. Big Smile

My first cruise was on the Fantasy back in 1991. I was in awe as a young woman at the beauty of that ship and I have such fond memories since it was just my mother and me.

Princess Cruise Line is starting to visit Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown, Virginia next year. One of the listed excursions is Jamestown.

Replicas of the three original ships (Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery) that made the four-month trek across the Atlantic in 1607 bringing the first Colonists to America are on exhibit here, and open to tour. Back in the 70s -- my longest lasting memory of the Jamestown ships -- are the crew bunks. I do not believe they were much longer than five feet in length, and 'maybe' two feet wide (smaller people back then, for sure!!). Even topside on the deck, not much room to move about. LOL - No pool, no shuffleboard, no jogging track.

The link below gives much more information about the three (cruise) ships, no longer in active Trans-Atlantic service. Sorry.

I do hope you do not injure your arm or hurt your back from all that patting.

What happens on the ship - STAYS on the ship. NOT telling !!!! (lol)

It looks fascinating. It's amazaing what they can do with technology today. Thanks for sharing.

Which one? The 1953 version, the one made in '58, or the 1997 remake?

Surely it wasn't the the 1943 German propaganda version, and it couldn't possibly be the 1912 silent movie about the disaster..............right?

FYI - I was cruising before the movie.

I was thinking the very same Lynn Happy

That sounds really lovely Yankee47.

Any pics Happy

Lynn is so beautiful

Some of you might argue the Nina, Pinta, and/or Santa Maria were the first cruise ships, or perhaps THE ARK, or maybe the Mayflower, but the ship that made most of us want to start cruising -- the RMS Titanic -- has a recently completed extensive underwater computer survey published. The first part of the below link shows a 3-D pictorial external tour of the ship, along with many additional undersea images, showing the bow, the stern, and various portions of the ship. Amazingly preserved. Shoes and champagne bottles can still be made out on the sea bottom around the ship.

And yes, for you youngsters, it might have been the movie, and NOT the actual Titanic ship that wanted you to cruise. FYI - I was cruising before the movie. And NO !!! I was NOT on the Ark !!! May all your cruises reach their departure ports, as expected. Happy cruising !!

I hope this link works.
