CRUISE INSURANCE PRO's and CONS

This ought to be interesting. We, as you may have guessed, are retired..gratefully...wouldn't want to do any of that other stuff again...We have checked MEDICARE and our SUPPLEMENTAL policies to see exactly what they cover "out there". Some folks leave it in place until payment is required, then you cant cancel it.. We make our bookings as far out as the schedule allows, choosing ships, cabins etc, when virtually everything and anything is available. When we started cruising, we had it. Now its like a tradition...to include it or not...lately its been not...

I think many folks in here have seen those ambulances pull up to the pier...and somebody's cruise gets, shall we say, interrupted....in a place that isn't known for stellar medical care, or cutting deals with cruise ship passengers.

What say you?

I don't think this kind of insurance is unusual in Canada. We had the same kind of deal through my husband's work insurance and when we retired we transferred to my extended health plan for retired teachers which was less expensive. This type of extended health care covers extra services not included in our government health plan.

CONS: Costs more

PROS: Always good to have in case something happens. It saved me a few times!

We always get travel insurance, primarily for the medical portion but also for trip cancellation problems that might arise. When you have three month cruising paid for it is fiduciarily wise to get some insurance back up. On a slightly different slant to this, we are going to Cuba in a few weeks for one day. That country is providing us with health insurance, that is a first.

"All guests are required to have Cuban health insurance coverage in order to enter Cuba, which is included in the cost of your cruise fare. The Cuban health insurance solely covers for any medical needs while the ship is visiting a Cuban port. Regular health or travel insurance is not accepted by the Cuban government for medical coverage."

"The Cuban government requires anyone who is traveling to Cuba on a passport other than a valid Cuban passport to obtain a visa prior to their arrival into Cuba. For US residents, this visa also known as a “rosada” must have a pink and blue background."

WOW!!...such a short post, and it sure said a mouthful...that must have been an epic odyssey!!! but..I would assume that kind of insurance coverage isn't generally available?? to recap, we have the ins when we book, and when it come time to pay (we pay in full at whatever minimum time the cruise line requires) we have the same discussion based on nothing...keep it, cancel it...we usually make our decisions a little better than that...I know, it makes no sense...

We have world wide health insurance as part of our extended health plan. It covers us for up to 60 days outside the country as many times as we need it. When husband had a heart attack in China it covered all our bills, including a hotel stay when he left hospital and transport home accompanied by a doctor.

I use it, especially with early reservations. Have to consider travel interruptions and family medical issues. Piece of mind. (If I get it, then I won't have to use it LOL Happy )

Fascinating...I suspect you have traveled probly more than almost anyone so that means you've been declining the insurance for YEARS...mind me asking why???

I always get Travel Insurance

I always look at the pros and cons before I buy travel insurance. For example the last Alaskan cruise I did not buy it. We left Vancouver and went to Whittier. If we could not have made the cruise it was a financial risk we were willing to take. The cruise we are taking in February to the Antartica we have the travel insurance, just in case.

I don't take travel insurance but I may be considering it as I get older.
