ship smelled like a well used ashtray and needed refurbishments

In response to review, CrusinTim says ...

Smoking is NOT allowed on the Balconies of Carnival ships nor is it allowed on the majority of balconies with other cruise lines. If you would have contacted the customer service desk, those people would have gotten some hefty fines (think it's like $250 per occurrence). As for recommending not to purchase a cruise if they allow smoking on the ship, no one would take a cruise as smoking is permitted on cruise ships in designated areas. The Balcony is not one of those areas.

I have been know to leave notes for the offenders. Yep, I'm that lady. Most smokers these days are better than before, but there are always those that think they can do what they want. Non-smokers too for that matter, but that is another topic. Any insight into how other cruise lines handle the problem?

It would definitely be disappointing to have a balcony and not use it because of the cigarette smoke. The smokers may have had quite a surprise when they got their S&S statement with fines for not following the rules.

That is one of Carnival's new ambiance specials. They make some of their ships smell like older ships. You may not have liked it, but it brings back fond memories of our early cruises.

I have friends who just got off a Carnival ship & reported the guests next door were smoking on their balcony. The front desk took the information but the smoking continued. Perhaps the smokers were charged a cleaning fee but who knows. It didn't improve the situation for my friends for the length of the cruise.

Fair enough. I think some of the ships handle the situation better than others. There also seems to be fewer smokers than before....at least on our recent cruises. Maybe, the message is getting through as I don't believe there are fewer rude people that don't care about anyone else and continue to break the "rules". I glad you found some cruise lines that fit with your preferences. That is the beauty of the free market!Big Smile

@AuntPinkie, Six years ago Carnival did not allow smoking on balconies either. The ship's management did nothing to stop the guests from breaking this rule. We were told there was nothing Carnival could do about the smoking. The policy was the guests would be charged an extra cleaning fee. I have been reading the recent reviews, and it seems the ship is still in need of changes. We have been on other cruise lines and comparing Carnival to them is like comparing apples and oranges.

A lot has happened in the cruise industry in six years, mostly for the better!
