Adult Only Excursions

Luckily, I have never run into a problem like the one that you mentioned. I love train rides.

One word : Benadryl.

There isn't a lot of situational awareness displayed by the general cruising public. Some lines are better about accurately describing, restricting or enforcing restrictions of some of their excursions. For example, Princess' details down to the number of steps between point A and point B. It gives a much clearer picture of expectations. Some lines are better at customer service where excursion planning is concerned. RC was fabulous working with us on a Euro cruise. We could not have been better prepared for our tours. I believe some lines are beginning to offer custom excursions. These include smaller and private groups. The price tag may cause cardiac arrest though.

How we handle excursions varies. On our SoPac cruise last year, we booked private tours because of the problems that open enrollment large bus tours pose. It was becoming a major and regularly occurring drama that we don't need while on vacation. It goes something like this... I arrange a reserved accessible seat at the front of the bus. Some clown parks their butt in the seat. Their perspective is "I'm handicapped so this must be for me". When it happens I back off and let the tour leader address it. S/he has the names of those who reserve in advance. It makes for an uncomfortable day all around so we are less inclined to do the cruise line-organized tours for that reason alone.

But I digress... We would definitely look into private cruise line-arranged tours on our next voyage.

My original post did not say kids should not be allowed - it was intended to alert people with small children that it is a long, closely confined haul up the mountain and back..choose accordingly.

If this excursion was not suitable for children, there would be age restrictions. Since there were no age restrictions, everyone needs to be prepared for any situation that could happen with youngsters. One family with upset children shouldn't make an excursion have specific rules not allowing kids. Over the time that this excursion has been running, there may have been hundreds of delighted families with young children who have taken part. Some toddlers scream and cry on airplanes, but there's no rule saying they can't fly.

You're right. But since Grandma was with them, they probably didn't have anyone to leave them with.

At certain ages, children do not do well on planes, trains, cars, ships ...any moving object. There are tons of things to do with small children on land ... If I never see Monkey Jungle, Parrot Jungle, any Disney "Jungle" again in my life, I would be thrilled. That said, if you feel possessed to take a cruise with the kids, choose a kid/family oriented cruise line! And if you don't like cruising with children, choose an adult oriented cruise and find the adult only areas on the ship.

LOL Big Meanie! I totally agree ToddRohl, sadly parents do not use common sense when cruising with children and let them run wild. Not all parents but some, and those that do, give all families on a cruise a bad name.
